Des piles de romans français, par Vincent van Gogh

Vincent van Gogh · October -November 1887 · Paris

Stacks of French novels, F358Reproduction of oil painting on canvas

Paperback novels pile up in disorder on a pink table, while an open book advances alone in the foreground. Their yellow, green, red and gray covers form an irregular architecture dedicated to modern literature.

Look at the work

An open book invites you to enter the pile of modern novels

The closed volumes are seen slightly from above and intersect in several directions. Their backs and clear pages create a succession of horizontal bands, interrupted by a few red and green covers.

The open work in the foreground isolates two gray-white pages on the pink tablecloth. Its placement at the lower edge takes still life from simple accumulation to a concrete invitation to read.

Piles of French novels F358/JH1612 is an oil on canvas of 54.4 × 73.6 cm painted in Paris in October - November 1887. It belongs to the Van Gogh Museum under the number s0021V1962.

Composition, touch and color

Three observations specific to this painting

The books are not identified title by title: their shapes, colors and arrangement are enough to evoke reading. Van Gogh constructs a modern still life with mass-produced objects.

01

Yellow covers dominate as a sign of contemporary publishing

These paperbacks were immediately recognizable to readers of the time. Their color unifies the pile despite the changing orientations.

02

The diagonals prevent the stack from becoming a static mass

Each book rotates slightly from the next. The corners of the covers guide the eye to the open volume that stands out in front.

03

The pink table makes the greens and grays of the works vibrate

Small pink hatching surrounds the piles and passes between them. The yellow-ochre background closes the space without introducing anecdotal decoration.

Documented benchmarks

Precisely identify the original work

F358/JH1612, inventory s0021V1962 and dimensions 54.4 × 73.6 cm identify this pictorial homage to contemporary French literature.

Reading

Van Gogh is a passionate reader of French novels

He particularly admires Émile Zola and the Goncourt brothers, whose books, according to him, offer a realistic and unembellished vision of modern life.

Edition

The yellow covers were recognizable in the 19th century

They notably mentioned the inexpensive volumes of the publisher Charpentier. This visual code immediately signaled contemporary literature.

Invitation

The open book gives way to the viewer

Unlike closed volumes, it presents its pages towards the edge of the canvas. The museum sees this as a direct invitation to come and read.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

The copy must preserve the multiplicity of angles, the yellow covers, the light edges, the red and green accents, the open book in the foreground and the pink hatching of the tablecloth.

  • The open book isolated at the bottom edge
  • The three piles of different heights
  • The dominant yellow and ocher covers
  • The red and green volumes that punctuate the whole
  • The little pink touches visible between the books
