Peasant girl cooking by the fire, par Vincent van Gogh

Vincent van Gogh · 1885 · Nuenen, Netherlands

Peasant girl cooking by the fireReproduction of oil painting on canvas

A peasant woman prepares the meal in the darkness of a rural interior. The flame, the pot and the few utensils emerge from a dull range where Van Gogh seeks the concrete truth of daily life.

Look at the work

The warmth of the home in a dark room

The woman stands near a low hearth, facing a frying pan whose surface captures the light. Around her, the hanging kettle, clogs, white bowl and uneven floor make up a simple inventory of domestic life. None accessory is not decorative: each object participates in the action.

Painted in Nuenen in late spring 1885, shortly after The Potato Eaters, the work retains the dark colors that Van Gogh associated with earth and unpeeled potatoes. Blackened greens, browns and ochres are awakened by the small yellow flame.

Light does not idealize the scene: it reveals the work, the smoke and the physical presence of a peasant interior.

Composition, touch and color

Three observations specific to this painting

Composition requires distinguishing shapes in the shadows without artificially lightening the atmosphere desired by Van Gogh.

01

Localized light

The flame and the hot metal form the luminous core. The other objects appear by degrees, thanks to thin accents on the face, apron, hooves and bowl.

02

Smoky greens

The wall and clothing use greens folded down by brown and black. This range connects the figure to the room and avoids any theatrical separation.

03

A tight space

The woman, the stove and the utensils occupy almost the entire surface. The framing gives the domestic gesture a monumental density despite the small format.

Documented benchmarks

Precisely identify the original work

The Met notice places this work in Nuenen, in the late spring of 1885, immediately after the completion of The Potato Eaters.

Period

Nuenen, spring 1885

Van Gogh then studied working peasants and dimly lit interiors, in search of a deliberately non-idealized painting.

Palette

The color of the earth

The artist defends these dark and earthy tones, which he considers more accurate in translating the smoke, vapor and harshness of the rural environment.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

The painter must maintain the depth of the shadows while keeping the face, hands, pan and objects in the foreground legible.

  • The little yellow flame and its reflections on the pan
  • The concentrated profile of the peasant woman and the position of her hands
  • Transitions between dark greens, browns and warm blacks
  • Details of the bowl, clogs and kettle without excessive sharpness
