À propos de l’œuvre
Mademoiselle Gachet au jardin, par Vincent van Gogh
Vincent van Gogh · June 1890 · Auvers-sur-Oise, France
Miss Gachet in her gardenReproduction of oil painting on canvas
Marguerite Gachet appears in the middle of a garden so dense that flowers, pots, herbs and trees seem to absorb her. Its light color forms a calm vertical in a surface covered with greens, yellows and touches of mauve.
Look at the work
A white figure in the heart of the Auvers garden
Marguerite Gachet stands slightly to the right of center. Her dress, painted white, pale yellow and lilac, contrasts with the very tight grass. Around her, round flowers, stakes and terracotta pots make up an abundant foreground.
Behind the young woman, a large dark cypress closes the depth while red roofs and a strip of sky remain visible on the left. The horizon line is high: almost three quarters of the canvas belongs to the garden.
The portrait and the landscape are inseparable: Marguerite is not posed in front of a setting, she becomes one of the vertical rhythms of the vegetation.
Composition, touch and color
Three observations specific to this painting
The RF 1954 13 canvas can be recognized by its horizontal format, the white dress of Marguerite Gachet and the large dark cypress placed behind her.
The dress as a point of light
White is never pure. Van Gogh modulates it with yellows, pinks and mauves, which connects the figure to the flowers and the sky while keeping it readable.
A garden built in small steps
Flowers, leaves and blades of grass are indicated by juxtaposed commas and dots. This fragmentation gives the soil continuous movement, without losing the structure of the beds.
Cypress as a counterweight
The vertical mass of the cypress responds to Marguerite's slim silhouette. Its almost black green increases the luminosity of the dress and stabilizes the right part.
