Look at the work

A Normandy beach seen through humid air and light

The sea occupies the left half and joins the beach by a succession of white and pale blue curves. In the center, the rock of Amont forms a vertical landmark. The cliff in the foreground, cut to the right, establishes a high viewpoint and leads towards the houses of the village.

Fresh blues, greens and yellows dominate the water and the sky. The sand retains pinkish-beige passages where the preparation of the canvas itself contributes to the color. The brushstrokes remain free and visible, as if the landscape had been noted before the light changed.

The apparent subject is the coast, but the real protagonist is the light: it dilutes the contours, crosses the sea air and changes the beach from pink to blue then green.

Short lines in the sea, drier passages on the cliffs and red touches for the houses respond to different materials. The whole thing keeps the freshness of a sensation observed on site.

A few vermilion accents on the right are enough to indicate the roofs. Their intensity must remain measured so as not to compete with the marine expanse.

These reserves are part of the original treatment. Covering them with an even layer would remove the breathing and speed specific to this version.

The National Museum of Poznaÿ documents La Plage de Pourville, oil on canvas from 1882 measuring 60 × 73 cm and listed as Wildenstein 807.

Outdoors01

Grains of sand found in the pictorial layer

Examinations of the work revealed grains of sand caught in the painting. This material detail confirms that Monet worked directly on the coast, in contact with the wind and the beach.

Collection02

The only Monet kept in a Polish museum

Paul Durand-Ruel is the first known owner. The museum purchased the painting in 1906 during an exhibition of French impressionists organized in Poznaÿ by Paul Cassirer.

History03

Stolen in 2000, found in 2009

Cut from its frame during the theft, the work was recovered and then restored before returning to the exhibition in 2010. The damaged part of the signature, lower right, has not been reconstructed.
