À propos de l’œuvre

La Plage de Sainte-Adresse, par Claude Monet

Claude Monet · Fishermen at the foot of Pointe de la Hève · Tochigi Prefectural Museum of Fine Arts

Sainte-Adresse Beach W39ahand painted reproduction

At sunset, the Pointe de la Hève forms a dark mass above the pebble beach. Two fishermen pull a boat towards the shore, several hulls wait on the shore and a sailboat moves away alone into the golden light. The very elongated format gives this small canvas from 1864 the silent scale of a panorama.

Look at the work

The last light separates the open sea, the cliff and the resting boats

The sea occupies the entire left half and receives an orange-yellow stripe near the horizon. A dark sailboat stands out in this luminous area. To the right, the promontory descends diagonally towards the center and gradually closes the view, like a large rock wing projected onto the beach.

The boats in the foreground are aligned without rigidity along the shore. Two figures lean near the central hull, small enough to remain integrated into the landscape. The pebbles and foam are indicated by clear touches that connect the boats to the reflection of the sky.

Monet does not paint a spectacular sunset: he captures the moment when the residual light still reveals the cliff, the fishermen and the hulls before dark.

Composition, touch and light

What Monet builds behind the impression of snapshot

Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.

01

A 30 × 69 cm format built like a panoramic navy

The width allows the empty sea to counterbalance the cliff and the boats gathered on the right. The gaze passes from the isolated sailboat to the activity of fishermen without encountering a single center.

02

The cliff shaped by the backlight

The cape appears almost black, but it receives browns, greens and weak warm passages around its contour. These shades maintain volume while preserving the silhouette effect.

03

Golden reflections fragmented by the chop

The bright area is not a flat yellow. Gray, blue and brown touches interrupt it and make visible the movement of the water at low tide.

Reference image

Read this specific version

The visual corresponds to La Plage de Sainte-Adresse from 1864, kept at the Tochigi Prefectural Museum of Fine Arts and listed as Wildenstein 39a. The museum's reference photograph has been converted into a real WebP of 3,000 × 1,292 px.

Composition01

The silhouette of the cape must keep its precise profile

Changes in slope and rocky projections identify the tip of the Hève. Too simple a triangular mass would cause the sensation of the real site to be lost.

Color02

The boats are dark but never identical

Each hull varies in its length, orientation and reflections. A few light borders are enough to separate them from the beach without making them too detailed.

Matter03

The sky retains a muffled light

Yellows, pinks, grays and mauves overlap in irregular bands. Too much saturation would transform the restrained atmosphere of the evening into a theatrical effect.

Documented benchmarks

Three pieces of information specific to this work

Painted in 1864, this oil on canvas measures 30 × 69 cm. It is kept at the Tochigi Prefectural Museum of Fine Arts and listed as Wildenstein 39a.

Viewpoint01

At the foot of Pointe de la Hève

Monet settles on the shore, below the cliffs and with his back turned to Le Havre. He looks towards the rocky point nicknamed the "end of the world", a motif that he then studies in drawing, pastel and painting.

Scene02

Two fishermen bring back their boat

The MuMa describes the men pulling a hull on the shore, the sailboat moving away and the last rays received by the limestone rock. These elements give a specific time, activity and tidal state to the landscape.

First collection03

Léon Monet supported his brother very early on

Claude's older brother acquired this painting in the years when the young painter was still struggling to sell his works. This purchase belongs to the first core of Norman landscapes preserved by Léon Monet.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

Fidelity here depends on precise relationships between light, touch, depth and color temperature.

  • Respect the very low panoramic format.
  • Maintain the dark profile of Pointe de la Hève.
  • Separate boats by small differences in value.
  • Keep the sunset golden but moderate.

Presentation in your interior

A palette designed with the room

This small panoramic navy is suitable above a desk, console or headboard. A soft walnut, bronze or black frame extends the backlight; a sand, linen or mauve gray wall reveals the sky.
