À propos de l’œuvre

La Plage de Sainte-Adresse, par Claude Monet

Claude Monet · Boats, fishermen and Norman skies · Art Institute of Chicago

Sainte-Adresse Beach W92hand painted reproduction

Under an immense sky covered with silver clouds, fishermen work near boats pulled on the pebbles of Sainte-Adresse. A blue boat occupies the center of the shore, while several brown sails move away on a turquoise sea. Monet assembles rapid observations and a very safe construction: the curve of the beach leads the eye towards the village, then the horizon opens up all the light of the English Channel.

Look at the work

The white beach, the blue boat and the dark sails are ordered under a moving sky

The shore enters from the lower left corner and narrows towards a bell tower placed far on the horizon. Three men stand near the boats: their blue, brown and black clothing gives them a clear presence without interrupting the movement of the beach. A fourth figure, dressed in white and red, appears near the water.

The sea forms a calm blue-green band, punctuated by small boats. The brown sails, of decreasing sizes, establish a diagonal to the right. Above, the gray, white and pale blue touches of the sky occupy almost two thirds of the canvas and make bright but changing weather noticeable.

The sky is not a background: its vast breathing regulates the scale of the figures, the color of the sea and the freshness of the entire shore.

Composition, touch and light

What Monet builds behind the impression of snapshot

Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.

01

A composition governed by the curve of the coast

The line of pebbles connects the group of fishermen to the distant village. It avoids too simple a horizontal separation between land and sea and gives the scene a deep movement to the left.

02

The blue boat as a colorful pivot

Placed in the center of the foreground, it receives the most intense blue of the painting. Its hull forms a wide dark curve which responds to the sails and stabilizes the light extent of the pebbles.

03

Light obtained by visible preparation

The Art Institute observes that a pinkish beige background remains visible between certain touches. These gaps warm up the whites and blues, while the last drier passages make the surface sparkle.

Composition01

The pebbles are not a uniform white

Blues, pinks, grays, ochres and preparation reserves build the beach. Their variation must remain perceptible to maintain its depth and the effect of humid light.

Color02

The figures maintain rapid writing

A few masses of color and small touches are enough to describe their postures. Too precise contours would isolate them from the shore and weaken the spontaneity of the scene.

Matter03

Dark sails punctuate the clear sea

The red brown of the sails creates several increasingly smaller accents. Their irregular spacing animates the horizon without transforming navigation into a decorative procession.

Documented benchmarks

Three pieces of information specific to this work

Signed and dated Claude Monet 67 lower right, this oil on canvas measures 75.8 × 102.5 cm. It is kept at the Art Institute of Chicago under inventory 1933.439 and classified Wildenstein 92.

Stay01

Holy Address during the summer of 1867

Monet works on the Normandy coast near Le Havre, where part of his family resides. The motif combines the daily activities of fishermen with the maritime landscape which he studies under changing lights.

Painting02

A pinkish beige preparation and visible covers

Art Institute technical studies show areas left in reserve, dry touches placed on texture and alterations around the horizon, water and fishermen. The composition was therefore clarified directly on the canvas.

Collection03

Mr. and Mrs. Lewis Larned Coburn Memorial Collection

The painting entered the Art Institute of Chicago in 1933. Its 1933,439 inventory and technical documentation make it possible to precisely identify this version among the numerous seascapes of Sainte-Adresse.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

Fidelity here depends on precise relationships between light, touch, depth and color temperature.

  • Maintain the luminous magnitude of the sky.
  • Keep the curve from the beach to the village.
  • Make the blue boat the colorful center.
  • Vary the pebbles without transforming them into a repetitive texture.

Presentation in your interior

A palette designed with the room

This light navy is suitable for a living room, bedroom or seaside home. A light oak, off-white or gray blue frame accompanies the sky; diffused natural light highlights the turquoise of the water and the pinkish nuances of the beach.
