The Sickle Reaper, F687Reproduction of oil painting on canvas

Curved very low in the wheat, a reaper extends his sickle towards the stems, while black birds punctuate the pale sky; Van Gogh transforms a Millet print into an exercise in movement and color.

Look at the work

The sickle gesture at field level

The worker forms a compact diagonal between his blue back and his outstretched arms. One leg moves forward, the other folds, and the heavy shoes anchor the silhouette in the stubble.

The field rises very high behind the figure and reduces the sky to a clear band. The birds, ears and traces of the sickle are indicated by small touches which punctuate the space.

Van Gogh relies on an engraving after Jean-François Millet to continue studying the figure at work when he does not have a model in Saint-Rémy. He does not hide this learning and considers it an essential practice.

Composition, touch and color

Three observations specific to this painting

The Van Gogh Museum identifies the work under s0198V1962, with the references F687/JH1782 and the format of 44 × 33 cm.

01

A difficult posture made readable

The almost horizontal back, elongated arms and unbalanced legs precisely describe the reaper's effort as he cuts the stems.

02

The blue detaches the figure

The blue blouse and pants are immediately distinguishable from the yellow-green field. The contrast replaces a large part of the modeling.

03

A sky inhabited by birds

The small black silhouettes prolong the movement of the keys and prevent the strip of sky from becoming an empty area.

Documented benchmarks

Precisely identify the original work

The official notice emphasizes that Van Gogh particularly worked on figures in action, a subject that he considered difficult and which he studied until the end of his career.

Tool

A sickle held close to the ground

The short blade cuts grain in handfuls; the very low position of the body corresponds to this precise manual work.

Source

A composition after Millet

Van Gogh follows an image printed in black and white, then invents the accord of blues, yellows, greens and pink skies.

Study

Don't lose sight of the figure

In a letter to Theo, he explains that these copies allow him to continue the study of the human body in the absence of models.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

The copy must retain the shortcut of the curved body, the fineness of the sickle and the clear separation between the blues of the garment and the yellows of the field.

  • The blue back almost horizontal
  • Hands close to the sickle
  • Heavy shoes
  • The cob curtain behind the figure
  • Black birds in the sky
