Block of rocks, Belle-Île W1097hand painted reproduction

Two enormous rock masses occupy almost the entire canvas, separated by a dark gash where a thin passage of water appears. The blue of the sea and a strip of clear sky only remain above the cliffs, while a colorful reef closes the foreground. Painted in Belle-Île in 1886, this oil on canvas measuring 65 × 81 cm belongs to a private collection and corresponds to Wildenstein 1097.

Look at the work

The rock seen so closely that it becomes a landscape

The left block advances towards the center, facing a higher wall on the right. Between them, a vertical opening reveals blue water. The foreground is blocked by a lower rocky ridge, and the horizon only appears in the upper part.

The cliffs are built by a mosaic of green, yellow, pink, purple, orange and blue. The central shadows take on almost black tones, while the sky and sea provide calmer surfaces of light blue and turquoise.

Monet reverses the usual naval scale: the ocean becomes a distant opening, while the rock, close to the edge, constitutes almost everyone visible.

Composition, touch and light

What Monet builds behind the impression of snapshot

Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.

01

An extremely close framing

The rocks overflow on three sides and hide the coast. This proximity eliminates the picturesque from the panorama to concentrate the eye on the material and colors.

02

A depth reduced to a splitting of water

The dark passage in the center organizes the entire perspective. Its thin turquoise band is enough to separate the two masses and lead out to sea.

03

The modeled stone without uniform brown

Monet uses complementary colors and small interlocking touches. At a distance, they form the relief; up close, they retain their pictorial autonomy.

Read this specific version

A single exact image of W1097 is used throughout the file and as the sole media for the product. The real WebP measures 1024 × 832 px and retains the native definition available without artificial enlargement.

Composition01

Keep black notch in center

It is the essential point of depth and must remain connected to the thin ribbon of water.

Color02

Preserve the colorful mosaic of the cliffs

Greens, pinks, yellows and purples should remain distinct to give light without smoothing the rock.

Matter03

Keep the little strip of sky and sea

It measures the scale of blocks and prevents composition from becoming entirely abstract.

Documented benchmarks

Three pieces of information specific to this work

The Wildenstein catalog identifies Bloc de Rochers, Belle-Île as an oil on canvas from 1886, 65 × 81 cm, kept in a private collection under number W1097.

Stay01

A campaign lasting more than two months on the wild coast

Monet lived in Belle-Île from September 12 to November 25, 1886. He worked around Port-Goulphar, Port-Domois and Port-Coton in often difficult weather conditions.

Series02

A canvas located between Port-Goulphar and the open coast

W1097 belongs to the group of close-up views where boulders replace the horizon as the main subject.

Collection03

A work today in private hands

The Wildenstein reference makes it possible to distinguish this composition from W1096, another block of rocks in Port-Goulphar of almost square format.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

Fidelity here depends on precise relationships between light, touch, depth and color temperature.

  • The Wildenstein 1097 version
  • The two large cliffs close together
  • The dark water slot in the center
  • The green, pink and purple mosaic of the rocks
