Prunier en fleurs, d'après Hiroshige, par Vincent van Gogh

Plum tree in bloom after Hiroshige, F371Reproduction of oil painting on canvas

A red and blue plum tree trunk cuts off almost the entire view of Kameido's garden; Van Gogh enlarges Hiroshige's print, pushes his colors to contrast and adds two orange bands covered with Japanese characters.

Look at the work

Kameido's garden seen through a trunk

The old plum tree crosses the foreground in a dark, sinuous shape. Behind him, small visitors and flowering trees give the scale of the garden.

The red sky, green ground and blue-brown trunk simplify the space into large areas. White flowers punctuate this construction like small lights.

Van Gogh owns Hiroshige's Plum Garden in Kameido print. By copying it, he studies its bold framing and use of color, then transforms it into a more intense and material oil.

Composition, touch and color

Three observations specific to this painting

The Japanese factory F371/JH1296 measures 55.6 × 46.8 cm and is numbered s0115V1962 at the Van Gogh Museum.

01

A radical first plan

The giant trunk hides part of the garden and forces the eye to circulate around its branches, a solution foreign to the traditional Western landscape.

02

Black replaced by red and blue

Van Gogh abandons the gris and blacks of the model to build the bark with very contrasting red, blue and brown tones.

03

Two orange margins added

Side bands and their characters do not belong to Kameido's print; they amplify its decorative effect.

Documented benchmarks

Precisely identify the original work

The museum notice places this work among the three paintings made from prints from Van Gogh's personal collection.

Model

Plum Garden in Kameido

The print belongs to Hiroshige's One Hundred Famous Views of Edo series and shows a garden famous for its old plum tree.

Series

Three Japanese copies

Van Gogh created three paintings based on prints to explore their framing, style and way of organizing color.

Effect

An image that makes him happy

Van Gogh writes that Japanese art makes him cheerful; this admiration here nourishes a particularly lively red, green and orange range.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

The copy must retain the exact silhouette of the large trunk, the clear separation of the solids and the calligraphic border, without attenuating the red and green contrasts.

  • The monumental trunk in the foreground
  • The white flowers of the plum tree
  • The degraded red sky
  • The Kameido Green Garden
  • The two calligraphed orange bands
