Look at the work

The garden becomes a first monumental plan in front of the Seine

The flowers occupy the lower two thirds and form a dense mass which seems to rise towards the viewer. A taller stem on the left responds to the bouquet of foliage in the center. The river only appears above this border.

Vermilion reds, orange-yellows and deep greens are laid in circular or short touches. The sky and water use more diffuse pinks, mauves and blues. This opposition separates the nearby garden from the atmospheric landscape.

The Seine is no longer the main subject: it becomes the distant calm before which the garden of Vétheuil asserts all its color and materiality.

Composition, touch and light

What Monet builds behind the impression of snapshot

Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.

01

A horizon raised by the vertical format

The floral mass pushes the river and the sky upwards. This construction places the viewer almost inside the flowerbeds.

02

A depth created by density

Nearby flowers are broad, contrasting and numerous; distant planes become smoother and paler. The change of touch replaces a drawn perspective.

03

Warm colors in front of a cold river

The reds and yellows of the garden stand out against the mauves and blues of the Seine. Complementarity organizes the reading of the entire canvas.

Read this specific version

The unique Google Art Project image of 4,517 × 5,701 px has been converted into a real WebP of 2,377 × 3,000 px. It allows a detailed zoom on the flowers and the key.

Composition01

Preserve the ample floral mass of the foreground

It must remain dominant and not be reduced to give more space to the distant landscape.

Color02

Preserve the boat on the Seine

This small horizontal element gives a scale to the river and subtly separates the garden from the opposite bank.

Matter03

Keep flowers in individualized touches

Reds, yellows and blues must remain irregular, with visible foliage between them, without becoming a uniform seedling.

Documented benchmarks

Three pieces of information specific to this work

The Museum of Fine Arts in Boston documents Flower Beds at Vétheuil, oil on canvas from 1881, 92.1 × 73.3 cm, signed Claude Monet 81, inventory 19.1313 and Wildenstein catalog 693.

Garden01

The plantations set up in front of the Vétheuil house

Monet obtained from the owner the possibility of cultivating the terraces going down towards the Seine and transformed the land into a pictorial motif.

Together02

Another vision of the Vétheuil garden

Unlike W685, organized around an alley and a house, W693 brings the massifs closer to the edge of the canvas and lets the river appear above.

Registration03

Claude Monet 81 top left

The red signature stands out in the clear sky and confirms the year of this campaign dedicated to the garden and the surroundings of Vétheuil.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

Fidelity here depends on precise relationships between light, touch, depth and color temperature.

  • The Wildenstein 693 version
  • The large red and yellow massifs
  • The Seine behind the garden
  • The red signature in the sky
