A vertical format controlled by the masts
The two almost parallel lines give its height to the composition. They connect the dark hull to the vast sky and prevent the port from being reduced to a simple panoramic view.

Artwork description
Claude Monet · Fécamp · 1881 · W644
At low tide, a black sailboat rests on the Fécamp shore, its two masts cut against a sky crossed by white clouds. The inclined hull, the buildings on the seafront and the small silhouettes at the water's edge give a precise scale to the scene. Signed and dated Claude Monet 81, this oil on vertical canvas measuring 82 × 60 cm is kept at the Tokyo Fuji Art Museum under number 01261 and corresponds to Wildenstein 644.

Look at the work
The boat occupies the center and bottom of the painting. Its black hull, lying on the sand, forms a powerful diagonal, while the masts lead the eye to the clouds. On the left, a row of facades borders the port; on the right, a few people walk the shore.
The blue-green of the sky and water is animated by thick whites, pale yellow and touches of turquoise. The hull concentrates blacks, greens and browns, while the sand reflects a cream light punctuated with ocher.
Monet contrasts two times in the same image: the heavy immobility of the stranded ship and the rapid course of the clouds above Fécamp.
Composition, touch and light
Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.
The two almost parallel lines give its height to the composition. They connect the dark hull to the vast sky and prevent the port from being reduced to a simple panoramic view.
Deprived of flotation, the sailboat becomes an oblique mass placed on the shore. Its weight contrasts with the tiny figures and light facades of the quay.
Clouds, reflections and sand are constructed by sharp touches. The boundaries between water and shore remain deliberately mobile, like the provisional state of the tide.
Reference image
A single exact image of W644 is used throughout the file and as the sole media for the product. The real WebP measures 950 × 1292 px and retains the native definition available without artificial enlargement.
It must dominate the foreground without becoming a uniform silhouette: greens, browns and blues reveal its volumes.
Their finesse structures the sky and justifies the vertical format of W644.
These elements locate Fécamp and reinforce the monumental presence of the boat.
Documented benchmarks
The Tokyo Fuji Art Museum documents Boat stranded at low tide, oil on canvas signed and dated 1881, 82 × 60 cm, inventory 01261 and Wildenstein catalog 644.
Monet returns to the Normandy coast that he has known since his youth. The port, the cliffs and the tidal effects offer him motifs where architecture encounters a rapidly changing light.
The visible signature and date precisely connect the painting to this campaign, before the stays of Pourville and Varengeville in 1882.
The Japanese museum registers it under number 01261. The reference Wildenstein 644 distinguishes it from the neighboring painting W645, dedicated to several boats at low tide.
