Boats on the beach in Étretat W824hand painted reproduction

Colorful fishing boats rest on the pebbles of Étretat, around a caloge formed by an upturned hull covered with thatch. This oil on canvas measuring 65 × 92 cm, painted in 1883, is kept at the Museum der bildenden Künste in Leipzig and corresponds to Wildenstein 824.

Look at the work

Boats at rest transform the beach into a composition of hulls and diagonals

A large dark boat advances from the left foreground, followed by red, green and black hulls arranged in depth. On the right, the massive caloge closes the composition and contrasts its ridged roof with the curves of the boats.

The sea and the sky merge into very light bluish grays. On the beach, pink, mauve, olive green and black give weight to the hulls. Short shadows indicate diffused light rather than clear sunshine.

W824 does not show the sea in action but the temporary architecture of the beach: boats pulled ashore, oblique masts and old hull transformed into shelter.

Composition, touch and light

What Monet builds behind the impression of snapshot

Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.

01

A depth created by the hulls

The boats overlap and quickly decrease towards the water. Their differently oriented bows animate the foreground without resorting to a visible geometric perspective.

02

The caloge as a counterweight

The large dark shelter occupies the entire right side. Its stable and almost rectangular shape balances the curved shells gathered on the left.

03

A subject related to fishing in Étretat

The boats mounted on the pebbles bear witness to a working range. Monet thus combines daily observation and study of colors under Norman light.

Reference image

Read this specific version

Only one exact image is used. The W824 photograph is converted to a true 3000 × 2071 px WebP, reduced from the high definition source and never artificially enlarged.

Composition01

Respect the scale of the black boat

The hull in the foreground must remain imposing and cut by the lower edge. It gives the viewer the feeling of being in the middle of the boats.

Color02

Preserve acidic greens and reds

These colorful accents distinguish boats and avoid an entirely gray scene. They must remain frank but contained in the foggy light.

Matter03

Vary the touches from pebble to wood

The beach receives short and irregular gestures; the sides of the hulls follow their curves; the roof of the caloge is ridged. These orientations make each material readable.

Documented benchmarks

Three pieces of information specific to this work

The Museum der bildenden Künste preserves Boats on the Beach in Étretat, oil on canvas from 1883, 65 × 92 cm and Wildenstein 824.

Object01

A caloge made of an upturned hull

In Étretat, old boats were turned over and then covered to become shelters. The large shape on the right documents this vernacular architecture of the coastline.

Collection02

Don Bühler-Brockhaus in 2004

The Leipzig Museum indicates that the painting joined its collection thanks to the Bühler-Brockhaus donation in 2004.

Series03

Another side of Étretat

Far from just monumental cliffs, Monet observes here the tools and rhythms of fishing. W824 precisely fixes this composition of boats at rest.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

Fidelity here depends on precise relationships between light, touch, depth and color temperature.

  • The Wildenstein 824 version
  • The large black boat in the foreground
  • The red and green shells arranged deep
  • The caloge built with an upturned hull
