Comprendre les formats
Claude Monet · Two boats at La Grenouillère · Kunsthalle in Bremen
Two boats seen very closely occupy almost the entire canvas. Their dark hulls cut through water animated by white, blue and green reflections. In this small format painted at La Grenouillère, Monet focuses his gaze on the vibrations of the water and on the way in which light fragments shapes.

Look at the work
The top boat enters from the left and ends in a point to the right. The second, placed lower and slightly offset, responds to him. The edges of the hulls form almost parallel diagonals, but their reflections and attachments prevent any rigidity.
Around the boats, the surface is constructed by short horizontal and oblique touches. The whites indicate the splinters, the blues and greens give depth, while the ochres reflect the wood. Space is understood without horizon or shore.
By removing almost the entire landscape, Monet makes water itself the subject and laboratory of his touch.
Composition, touch and light
Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.
The two boats are cut by the edges and seem to float very close to the viewer. This choice gives the study remarkable immediacy.
The browned blacks of the boats form the most continuous masses. All around, the separate touches make the water sparkle.
Under each shell, the dark color extends into irregular fragments. These passages connect the object to water instead of clearly detaching it from it.
Reference image
The single reference corresponds to the Wildenstein study 137, inventory 1183-1976/8 of the Kunsthalle Bremen. The file of 1020 × 723 px retained its native resolution, without enlargement, then was converted to WebP.
The variation in angle between the shells produces a lively rhythm. Making them perfectly parallel would cause the spontaneity of the pattern to be lost.
The boats mix brown, blue and very dark green. These shades integrate them into the water palette.
White and pale blue flashes should not be faded into gradients; their juxtaposition restores the lapping.
Documented benchmarks
Painted in 1869, this oil on canvas measuring 32.9 × 46.7 cm is kept at the Kunsthalle Bremen under inventory 1183-1976/8 and classified Wildenstein 137.
Monet worked in 1869 in this busy leisure area in Croissy-sur-Seine, where floating restaurants, baths and canoeing rub shoulders.
The two artists study the same motifs simultaneously. Their paintings then show a common research: translating water and light through visible and mobile touches.
The study comes from the Bremen collection of Meta Schütte. In accordance with family arrangements, she entered the Kunsthalle Bremen in 1976.
