Around them, the blue-green sea is covered with rapid curves, milky whites and dark reflections that make each boat unstable. The red sails advance in a sea seized in full movement

The main boat is placed in the right third. Its high, inclined and almost vertical sail contrasts with a very low black hull; the reflection under the hull immediately comes undone in green, purple and white curls.

A second, smaller boat shifts to the left and opens diagonally towards the sails of the horizon. Monet uses the reduction in sizes, but also the rarefaction of dark accents, to make the gaze retreat into a space without visible coast.

The depth comes less from a drawn perspective than from the rhythm of the boats: large, medium, then almost signs, they measure the distance in the middle of always moving water.

Warm sails in a cold range

The red, purple and black browns of the sails stand out against the turquoise blues and greens of the sea. This contrast makes the boats readable without drawing regular contours.

The curves and discontinuous lines change direction around the hulls. They suggest swell, wake and reflections without enclosing the water in a repetitive pattern.

A high and very light horizon

The strip of sky remains narrow and cloudy. This position gives more space to the sea and reinforces the feeling of being at boat level rather than facing a distant panorama.

Keep the loops and breaks from the sea

The features should not become regular decorative waves. Their irregularity precisely reflects the fleeting nature noted in the Van Gogh Museum cartel.

A maritime print captured quickly

During its exhibition at the Van Gogh Museum, the cartel emphasized that Monet had to work quickly: boats, sea and light changed simultaneously, and the touch retains this instability.

State02

A work signed and held to be completed

Despite his spontaneous appearance and his large visible reservations, Monet signed the painting. The sketched character therefore belongs to its desired effect, not to a simple preparatory state.

The painting is now owned by John & Marine van Vlissingen Fine Arts and was featured in the exhibition Long Live Impressionism! from the Van Gogh Museum.
