Monet frames as closely as possible a group of fishing boats moored in Honfleur. The green, white, black and orange hulls overlap until they make the limits of each boat almost inseparable. The folded sails and masts rise out of the field, while the water transforms their colors into broad vertical reflections.
Look at the work
On the left, a green and black hull bears clearly visible white letters. In the center, several white boats huddle around a dark boat marked with numbers. On the right, a red and black band animates an ocher hull, partially cut by the frame.
Above, the folded sails make up a mass of browns, greens and beiges. No horizon is visible: the viewer finds himself immersed in the activity of the quay. In the calm water, the reflections widen the colors of the hulls into almost abstract shapes.
By removing the sky and the horizon, Monet makes the port a world of interlocking shapes where color almost precedes the identification of boats.
Composition, touch and light
Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.
The painting does not describe the entire port. Hulls, bows, sails and masts fill the entire surface, according to a framing that Christie's compares to other preparatory studies for the large Port of Honfleur which has now disappeared.
The inscriptions, waterlines and structure of the boats remain credible. Monet knows this vocabulary well, but he condenses it into colorful masses that fit together and respond to each other.
The boats are built by relatively firm contours and flat areas; their reflections become long, supple touches. This contrast makes the stability of the hulls and the mobility of the water felt.

The visual corresponds to inventory 8267/301 of the National Art Museum of Romania and Wildenstein number 74. The available image of 995 × 817 px has been preserved in its native definition and encoded in real WebP, without artificial enlargement.
Their light changes depending on the orientation and proximity of the boats. Uniform white would remove volumes and the impression of entanglement.
Letters and numbers are visible without becoming too sharp graphically. They contribute to the identity of the boats while belonging to the pictorial material.
Each color descends into the water with a different width and length. The edges mingle without exactly reproducing the design of the shells.
Documented benchmarks
Dated 1866 -1867, this oil on canvas measures 37.2 × 45.4 cm. It is kept at the National Art Museum of Romania under inventory 8267/301 and classified Wildenstein 74.
The Romanian heritage sheet links the work to the group of studies carried out outdoors in 1866 -1867. Monet then explores the pictorial character of boats and the possibilities of very close framing.
The canvas belongs to studies around an ambitious port composition of more than two meters, Wildenstein 77, probably destroyed during the Second World War. W74 retains one of the most daring framings of this work.
The painting is included in the collection of Romanian patron Anastase Simu for his private museum, then integrated into the national collections. It is today presented in the Gallery of European Art in Bucharest.
