Two large hulls and their dark sails slide over the Zaan in front of a low bank. Monet chooses a very elongated format, almost twice as wide as it is high, where the sky and the water respond to each other in light bands. Boats are not simple accessories: their sails, their masts and their reflections organize the entire movement of the composition.

Look at the work

The dark sails give rhythm to the Dutch light

The main boat stands out slightly to the left of the center. Its trapezoidal sail, painted deep brown and gray, extends into the water with a fragmented reflection. A second boat, placed further to the right and a little further away, repeats this pattern on a reduced scale. Together, they create a soft diagonal that crosses the panorama.

The bank of Zaandam forms a thin line of houses, trees and port buildings. Above, the sky occupies a large part of the canvas; below, the water receives cream, blue and gray streaks. The contours remain flexible, as if the humidity of the air brought the sky closer to the river.

In this small panorama, the masts are vertical measurements and reflections of free repetitions: they keep the space moving.

The width of 71 cm and only 35.2 cm in height accompanies the movement of boats. The eye travels the Zaan before returning to the sails.

The same broken whites, gray blues and tones of sand circulate above and below the horizon. The dark sails give this luminous envelope its contrast.

The bank does not cut the format in two: it remains thin, leaving the role of large atmospheric surfaces to the sky and water.

Browns, bluish grays and colored blacks focus the eye. The cream and pale blue tones around them reinforce their presence.

Non-symmetrical reflections

Traces under boats do not exactly copy hulls. Monet fragments them to translate moving water rather than a mirror.

Stay01

Monet's first Dutch trip

Monet stayed several months in Zaandam in 1871 with Camille and their son Jean. He returned to the Netherlands twice between 1871 and 1886.

The museum notice clearly links the scene to the river that crosses Zaandam. This additional title specifies the motif without changing the version represented.

Presentation in Swansea since 1974

The work was presented to the Glynn Vivian Art Gallery in 1974 by the British Treasury in settlement of inheritance tax.
