Paysanne déterrant des pommes de terre, par Vincent van Gogh

Peasant girl pulling potatoes, F98Reproduction of oil painting on canvas

A bent peasant woman pushes her pitchfork into green-brown soil, near a basket containing the already torn potatoes. His dark clothing, large clogs and landscape are painted in the same range, as if the work physically attached him to the field.

Look at the work

The whole body describes the effort before the tool is even visible

The back forms a heavy arc in the center of the composition. The arms descend towards the ground, the legs spread to stabilize the posture and the hooves anchor themselves in the upturned earth.

The oval basket in the foreground contains some light tubers. Further on, a dark barrier and a twisted tree close the field, while the cloudy sky extends the gray-green ground.

Peasant woman pulling potatoes F98/JH901 is an oil on canvas mounted on a 31.5 × 38 cm panel painted in Nuenen in August 1885. The KMSKA keeps it under number 2889.

Composition, touch and color

Three observations specific to this painting

Van Gogh refuses to idealize the agricultural gesture. Its angular touch, massive proportions and earthy palette reflect the weight of a movement repeated every day.

01

The silhouette blends deliberately into the landscape

Clothing, earth and hedge share the same browns and greens. Only the hand, the inclined face and a few edges of the apron stand out.

02

The basket provides a small focus of light

The light potatoes and the braided edge appear in the lower left corner. They precisely name the work represented.

03

Brushstrokes follow the resistance of the ground

Broken lines, impasto and scratches run through the earth around the feet. The painted surface seems as difficult to work with as the field.

Documented benchmarks

Precisely identify the original work

F98/JH901 and inventory 2889 identify this small painting from the KMSKA, produced after The Potato Eaters in a period when Van Gogh sought to better shape bodies at work.

Study

Van Gogh responds to criticism of the movement

Anthon van Rappard had judged the figures of the Potato Eaters to be too stiff. Van Gogh then multiplies the small scenes to give more volume and life to the gestures.

Model

The peasant woman is built by action rather than by the face

The gaze remains turned towards the ground. Back, arms, legs and tool describe a mechanical and daily movement, observed in the farms of Nuenen.

History

The painting was stolen and then found in 1997

Stealed from the KMSKA with a work by Monticelli, she was picked up two weeks later in a van during a police operation.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

The copy should preserve the bent posture, black-brown clothing, large hooves, potato basket, light scratches on the ground and the twisted tree in the background.

  • The continuous curve of the back and skirt
  • The clear hand that goes down towards the fork
  • The two hooves firmly apart
  • The oval basket and its tubers in the foreground
  • The long pale touches that streak the earth
