The nose, forehead and chin are indicated by some red-brown accents. Van Gogh seeks less worldly resemblance than the density of a presence.
Hands close the pose
The fingers are gathered on the knees in the lower right. This calm gesture balances the light and voluminous shape of the hat.
Black contains several colors
The garment and the background combine brown, green and very dark blue. Slight temperature differences prevent the silhouette from disappearing completely.
