Paysans ramassant des pommes de terre, par Vincent van Gogh

Vincent van Gogh · March-April 1890 · Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, France

Farmers collecting potatoesReproduction of oil painting on canvas

Two bent peasants search a gray and stony land, under an almost empty sky. Painted in Saint-Rémy, this small canvas nevertheless goes back to the rural workers and plowed fields that Van Gogh had studied at length in the north.

Look at the work

Two bodies absorbed in working the earth

The two figures occupy the center and repeat almost the same movement: back bent, legs apart, arms lowered towards the ground. Their blue and brown clothes stand out against a plain in beige gray tones.

A few light potatoes appear near their hands. The furrows do not follow a regular perspective; they are made up of thick, black, pink and ocher touches which make the earth as active a material as the characters.

The small format focuses the entire scene on the weight of the bodies and the resistance of the ground, without anecdote or picturesque setting.

Composition, touch and color

Three observations specific to this painting

The work F694 can be recognized by its two collectors placed side by side, with a very low field under a wide gray sky and a horizontal format of 32 × 40.5 cm.

01

A mirrored rhythm

The two peasants lean in the same direction, but their legs and clothes differ. This repetition transforms the daily gesture into a central motif.

02

A land built by impasto

Brown, lilac, gray and light touches accumulate without being melted. The ground appears heavy and uneven, which reinforces the physical effort of the figures.

03

A sky silenced

The large gray-blue area contains few details. This superior calm pushes the gaze towards the low line of the horizon and towards the curved bodies.

Documented benchmarks

Precisely identify the original work

Peasants collecting potatoes is an oil on canvas of 32 × 40.5 cm, painted in Saint-Rémy in March - April 1890. It bears the references F694 and JH1922 and is today indicated in a private collection.

Catalog

F694 · JH1922

Number F694 identifies this scene with two figures. He avoids confusing it with the numerous drawings and paintings by potato pickers made in Nuenen in 1884 -1885.

Memory

The North paints from Provence

In Saint-Rémy, Van Gogh returns to several peasant subjects associated with his Dutch period. Here, the open field and thick clothing evoke the North more than the Provençal light.

Conservation

Private collection

The historical bases are not unanimous on the old locations. The sheet retains the most cautious current state: a work kept in a private collection.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

The reproduction must keep the muted scale, the almost stony relief of the field and the readability of the two gestures, without artificially lightening the sky.

  • The two curved silhouettes in the center
  • Blue gray and red brown clothing
  • Small light potatoes near the hands
  • The thick earth crossed with lilac and black touches
