Peasant woman tying sheaves, F700Reproduction of oil painting on canvas

Curved among the wheat, a peasant woman ties a wreath while a second figure kneels in the foreground; Van Gogh translates a composition by Jean-François Millet into blue, yellow and lilac.

Look at the work

The gesture of working in a light field

The standing figure forms an arc in the center of the canvas: its blue back follows the movement of its arms towards the ears. Further down, a kneeling woman gathers the stems in a blue-purple dress.

The very high horizon leaves almost all space in the field. The sheaves are constructed by touches of yellow, cream and brown, while the gray-blue sky maintains a soft light.

This painting belongs to the twenty interpretations made from Millet prints during the stay at the asylum. Van Gogh saw it not as a servile copy, but as the pictorial equivalent of a musician freely interpreting the work of a composer.

Composition, touch and color

Three observations specific to this painting

The Van Gogh Museum keeps this version under inventory s0172V1962; the references F700/JH1781 and the format of 43.2 × 33.2 cm distinguish it from other covers after Millet.

01

A composition inherited from Millet

Van Gogh faithfully takes up the two workers and the horizon, but transforms the printed image into a painting based on color and material.

02

Blue in the heart of wheat

The blue and purple clothes contrast a clear freshness with the yellows of the field. This contrast makes the two silhouettes immediately readable.

03

The movement of the key

The lines follow the curved back, the arms and the direction of the ears. The gesture of the brush thus accompanies the gesture of the worker.

Documented benchmarks

Precisely identify the original work

The official notice explains the personal and artistic function that Van Gogh attributed to his colorful translations of Millet.

Together

One of twenty adaptations

Van Gogh studied prints by Millet and other artists when he did not have models in Saint-Rémy.

Project

Regain confidence through study

After the crises that weakened his work, these proven compositions allowed him to return to the human figure methodically.

Interpretation

From black and white to color

The fidelity of the drawing gives way to a chromatic invention: blues, yellows and lilacs do not exist in the source print.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

The copy must maintain the curved silhouette, the distinction of the two figures and the milky light of the field, while leaving the directional keys visible.

  • The peasant woman bent over in the center
  • The kneeling figure in the foreground
  • Blue and purple clothes
  • Creamy yellow sheaves
  • The blue-gray skyline
