À propos de l’œuvre
Paysanne au chapeau de paille assise devant un champ de blé, par Vincent van Gogh
Vincent van Gogh · End of June 1890 · Auvers-sur-Oise, France
Young peasant girl in a straw hat sitting in the wheatReproduction of oil painting on canvas
A young woman sits standing out in front of a field of wheat covered with tall stems and poppies. Her yellow hat with blue ribbon, her blue bodice punctuated with orange and her white apron compose a portrait where the figure and the countryside share the same energy.
Look at the work
A peasant woman motionless in the middle of a vibrant field
The young woman is framed up to her knees. Her right bust and clasped hands form a compact silhouette, while her gaze turns to the left. The large straw hat casts a shadow on the forehead and wears a light blue ribbon tied at the top.
Behind it, the wheat stalks rise in yellow, green and brown lines. Several red poppies punctuate the bottom and respond to the small orange patterns of the bodice. The light apron opens a calm area at the bottom of the composition.
Van Gogh unites the model with its environment with the same linear touch, while making the yellow hat the bright spot in the portrait.
Composition, touch and color
Three observations specific to this painting
The F774 work is distinguished by the blue ribbon hat, the dark bodice strewn with orange dots, the white apron and the poppies scattered in the wheat.
Face under hat
The yellows of the face and hat almost touch, but the brown shadow of the edge and a few red accents make the features readable. The side gaze avoids too rigid a frontal pose.
Patterns circulating
The orange dots of the garment, the poppies and the little warm touches of the field respond to each other. They visually connect the seated figure to the wheat that surrounds it.
Two opposing rhythms
The body forms a stable pyramid; the vertical and oblique stems of the background remain very mobile. This contrast gives the portrait its balance.
Documented benchmarks
Precisely identify the original work
This oil on canvas from the end of June 1890 belongs to a private collection. It is cataloged F774 and JH2053.
A peasant girl from Auvers
Van Gogh does not name the model. His costume, the wheat field and the seated posture, however, inscribe the portrait in the rural world that he observed around Auvers.
A portrait of 92 × 73 cm
The canvas is large enough to give the figure an almost life-size presence, while reserving ample space for the field and its long stems.
F774 · JH2053
These references make it possible to distinguish the young woman seated from the Young Girl standing in front of a wheat field, another female portrait painted in Auvers.

- The midnight blue bodice strewn with orange dots
- Hands gathered on the white apron
- The wheat stalks and red poppies at the bottom
