Peasant girl grinding linen, F697Reproduction of oil painting on canvas

From behind, a light-robed peasant girl activates a linen breaker in a barn open to a blue and yellow field; Van Gogh transforms a black and white print after Millet into a dense study of gestures and colors.

Look at the work

Linen work translated into blue and yellow

The figure occupies almost the entire height of the narrow format. Its curved back and arms follow the diagonal of the tool, while a ladder and a wooden post close the composition on the right.

The white dress is never uniform: gray, blue, mauve and ocher shape the folds. Through the opening of the barn, the clear field and the blue sky bring a luminous depth to the work scene.

In Saint-Rémy, Van Gogh rarely has models. He then took up the series of Works in the Fields by Jean-François Millet from printed reproductions, of which he completely invented the colorful range.

Composition, touch and color

Three observations specific to this painting

The Van Gogh Museum preserves this painting under inventory s0043V1962; its format of 40 × 26 cm and the references F697/JH1788 identify it precisely.

01

A monumental silhouette

The tight framing enlarges the peasant girl to the edges of the canvas. Its body and the machine make up a single architecture of diagonals.

02

White constructed by color

The headdress, bodice and apron combine blue, purple, beige and gray. These shades give weight to the fabric without resorting to a smooth pattern.

03

An invention from a print

The source image provided no chromatic indication. Van Gogh himself organizes the agreement between the cold dress, the golden straw and the blue landscape.

Documented benchmarks

Precisely identify the original work

The museum notice links the work to the set of interpretations that Van Gogh painted based on Millet's prints during his stay in the asylum.

Source

Millet Field Works

The composition comes from an engraving reproducing a subject by Jean-François Millet devoted to rural work.

Project

A series designed in color

Van Gogh copied the ten images of this suite and gave them unity with his accords of blue, yellow, green and mauve.

Gesture

Grind the flax stems

The breaker is used to break the woody part of the stems in order to release the textile fibers; effort controls the entire installation.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

The copy must preserve the slender format, the powerful diagonal of the breaker and the cold nuances of the dress, without erasing the relief of the visible touches.

  • The white headdress highlighted in blue
  • The worker's curved back
  • The long diagonals of the breaker
  • The yellow straw in the foreground
  • The light blue opening on the field
