Peasant woman seated halfway, F127Reproduction of oil painting on canvas
A seated peasant woman, dressed in a dark green dress and a white headdress, crosses her hands on her knees. The narrow framing and almost black background give all their strength to the ocher face, the light collar and the hands reddened by work.
Look at the work
A vertical figure constructed by three foci of light
The headdress and face form the first light accent, isolated in the upper half. Further down, a small tip of a white shirt marks the center, then the crossed hands close the composition at the lower edge.
The dark dress is not very detailed but remains structured by seams, a central fold and the outline of the arms. The model looks slightly to the right, away from the viewer, which gives the portrait a restrained presence.
Peasant woman seated halfway F127/JH651 is an oil on canvas mounted on a 46 × 27 cm panel painted in Nuenen in February 1885. The work is today in a private collection.
Composition, touch and color
Three observations specific to this painting
Van Gogh deliberately limits the chromatic range. The figure only emerges from the shadows through the yellows and reds of the face, the off-white of the headdress and the warm touches of the hands.
The very narrow format accentuates the frontality of the body
The shoulders almost touch the sides and the forearms converge towards the center. This compression gives the seated pose monumental stability.
The hands constitute a second portrait
Fingers, joints and reddened skin are placed in orange, ocher and brown touches. Their detail contrasts with the dress largely melted in the dark.
The white headdress focuses the light on the face
Its cream and gray folds surround the forehead without becoming radiant. The skin thus gains warmth in front of the black green background.
Documented benchmarks
Precisely identify the original work
F127/JH651, the dating of February 1885 and the dimensions 46 × 27 cm identify this seated peasant woman kept in a private collection.
The painting belongs to the peasant studies of Nuenen
At the beginning of 1885, Van Gogh multiplied the figures and heads of inhabitants of Brabant. He seeks to master the body, physiognomy and work clothing.
The canvas is now mounted on a panel
The painted layer rests on a canvas that has been fixed on a rigid support. This information distinguishes the work from a painting executed directly on wood.
Face, collar and hands punctuate the height
The three light areas are not decorative: they lead the eye from a lowered gaze to crossed fingers, crossing the large dark mass of the dress.
Your reproduction
What the painter must preserve
The copy must preserve the slender format, the cream white headdress, the orange-yellow face, the look turned to the right, the black green dress, the triangular collar and the crossed hands.
- The gray and yellow folds of the white headdress
- Eyes off-center to the right
- The little light collar above the dress
- The discreet seams of the dark green bodice
- Orange and brown fingers superimposed on the knees
