Two pine trees with winding trunks frame the old town of Bordighera and the sea barely visible behind it. Monet paints this view from the Collina dei Mostaccini, to the west of the city, and transforms the Mediterranean vegetation into a screen of greens, purples and roses crossed by light. Signed and dated "Claude Monet 84", this oil on canvas measuring 60 × 73 cm is kept at the Museum Barberini under the number MB-Mon-13. It corresponds to Wildenstein 852.

Look at the work

The distant city appears between two pines like a luminous gap in the thickness of the Mediterranean landscape

The first pine enters from the left and extends its crown over almost the entire sky; the second, thinner, curves in the center right. Their black and flexible trunks form an irregular frame. Between them, the houses of Bordighera line up on the hill in small pink, white and orange touches, dominated by the bell tower of Santa Maria Maddalena.

The vegetation in the foreground is not treated as a botanical inventory. Bushes, branches and foliage mingle in green, blue and red gestures, while a purple veil unifies the intermediate plane. The very pale pink sky and the thin strip of sea give the distance an almost pearly light, opposed to the unmixed blacks of the pines.

The Museum Barberini precisely locates the motif on the slope of the Collina dei Mostaccini: Monet starts from an exact topography, then uses the framing of the pines to make the southern light the real event of the painting.

Pines frame the view without enclosing it

Their asymmetry avoids the regular window effect. The large crown on the left weighs on the sky, while the central trunk opens an escape towards the city and maintains depth.

Bordighera remains readable in the heart of the colorful fog

The red roofs and the bell tower provide essential landmarks, but the facades blend into the plants. The city is less described than seen through the luminous air.

Pure blacks intensify the colors of the South

Monet places almost black accents in the trunks and branches. They bring out the roses from the sky, the oranges from the roofs and the purples from the ground without hardening the whole.

This colorful mist separates the vegetation near the city without creating an outline. It must remain transparent so that the houses seem bathed in the atmosphere.

Differentiate between touches of foliage

Cold greens, earthy reds and blues are juxtaposed rather than melted. Their irregular rhythm gives the impression of depth and movement under the southern light.

From this slope, Monet could see the old town and the sea behind her. Two close compositions, W853 and W854, retain the same sector under different frames.

More than thirty paintings painted from January 18 to April 6, 1884

After discovering the Riviera with Renoir the previous year, Monet returned alone. His letters to Alice Hoschedé recount his daily search for motifs and his effort to translate new vegetation and light.

Provenance03

One of twenty-one views purchased together by Durand-Ruel

In June 1884, the merchant acquired this group of paintings by Bordighera for 18,300 francs. W852 thus entered very early into Monet's circuit for the dissemination of Mediterranean landscapes.
