À propos de l’œuvre

Boulevard Héloise, Argenteuil, par Claude Monet

Claude Monet · Argenteuil in 1872 · Yale University Art Gallery

Boulevard Héloïse, Argenteuil W247hand painted reproduction

Boulevard Héloïse stretches in a silver mist between the houses, the trees and the promenade which bordered an old arm of the Seine. Small figures, cars and facades gradually appear in the humid air: Monet transforms a modern path into an atmospheric experience.

Look at the work

An urban perspective absorbed by fog

The roadway occupies almost the entire width of the foreground and narrows towards the center. On the left, the houses form a series of light facades punctuated with green doors and silhouettes; on the right, a row of trees and a balustrade accompany the escape from the boulevard.

A horse-drawn carriage and several passers-by measure the space without becoming portraits. Their dark accents barely stand out from the brown grays of the street. Further on, buildings and vegetation dissolve in a bluish vapor which erases the boundary between the city and the atmosphere.

The modernity of the boulevard is as much due to its circulation as to its gradual disappearance in the air: Monet paints a city which is built before our eyes then slips away.

Composition, touch and light

What Monet builds behind the impression of snapshot

Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.

01

A very low perspective

The edges of the roadway and the facades converge strongly towards the center. The large road surface gives the viewer the feeling of being placed in the middle of traffic.

02

Figures as punctuation

Loops and car distribute dark accents along the axis. Their small size reinforces the depth and enlivens the composition without interrupting the fog effect.

03

Two opposing rhythms

The continuous facades on the left respond to the more spaced trunks on the right. This alternation frames the central void and maintains the balance of a very elongated panorama.

Reference image

Read this specific version

The high definition reference from the Yale University Art Gallery reproduces the exact width of the W247 canvas, the silhouettes of the roadway and the nuances extremely close to the facades, the sky and the fog.

Composition01

A deliberately muted palette

Warm gray, pinkish brown, muted green and misty blue dominate; a few doors and clothes concentrate the rare firmer accents.

Color02

Details that decrease with distance

The first houses remain structured, then windows, loops and trees gradually become simple touches.

Matter03

Light without clear shadow

The overcast sky diffuses the lighting throughout the stage and prohibits harsh contrasts, even in the foreground.

Documented benchmarks

Three pieces of information specific to this work

Yale's notice and the publication The Impressionists at Argenteuil place this view precisely in the first months of Monet's stay in Argenteuil.

Location01

Boulevard Héloïse in Argenteuil

The route followed an old embanked arm of the Seine and was one of the main walks in the modern city observed by Monet.

Context02

A motif shared with Alfred Sisley

In 1872, Monet and Sisley each painted Boulevard Héloïse. Monet chooses here an atmosphere of fog and a very elongated framing.

Collection03

Inventory 1983.7.11

Preserved at Yale, this oil on canvas measures 33.6 × 57.7 cm and corresponds to number 247 of the Wildenstein catalog raisonné.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

Fidelity here depends on precise relationships between light, touch, depth and color temperature.

  • Respect the very elongated perspective of the roadway and the central vanishing point.
  • Maintain facades, trees and sky in a close range without losing their separation.
  • Precisely place passers-by and the car, essential on the boulevard scale.
  • Dissolve distant shapes in bluish grays rather than reducing them with a simple blur.

Presentation in your interior

A palette designed with the room

Its warm grays, pinkish earths and silent atmosphere give a lot of depth to a contemporary hallway, office or living room. A matte black, smoky gray or walnut frame highlights horizontality without weighing down the mist.
