Claude Monet · The neighborhood of his house under the snow · Museum of Fine Arts Boston

Boulevard Saint-Denis, Argenteuil, in winter W357ahand painted reproduction

A snowy path descends between two fences towards Boulevard Saint-Denis in Argenteuil. Several passers-by advance under their umbrellas; behind them, new houses with pink facades and green shutters emerge in the snow. The sun, reduced to a veiled yellow disk, diffuses a cold light which transforms the modern district into a succession of mauves, whites and muffled greens.

Look at the work

The central path transforms a winter walk into a study of depth and light

Two wooden barriers start from the lower corners and frame the path. Their dark verticals punctuate the snow, while the characters follow one another at different distances. The closest one, seen from behind, carries an umbrella and leads directly towards the boulevard.

The houses are distributed around a clear space. On the right, a large pink facade with green shutters responds to a lower construction in the center. Bare trees and purple shrubs filter the architecture; in the gray-blue sky, the yellow sun introduces the only circular light focus.

Monet makes the familiar neighborhood a modern motif where snow unites paths, houses, passers-by and atmosphere.

Composition, touch and light

What Monet builds behind the impression of snapshot

Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.

01

A perspective built by fences

Their converging alignments lead towards the houses without imposing a dry geometry. The stakes are uneven, partially covered in snow and animated by greens, grays and browns.

02

Passers-by set the pace of the walk

The silhouettes are not detailed, but their spacing measures the path. Umbrellas, dark coats and small blue or red touches introduce daily life into the white expanse.

03

The sun as a color rather than a drawn source

The yellow disc does not illuminate the scene with sharp shadows. It colors the surrounding clouds pink and ocher and makes a filtered, almost snowy winter light sensitive.

Read this specific version

The image corresponds to the 1978.633 inventory of the Museum of Fine Arts Boston and Wildenstein number 357a. The 1024 px source file was cropped to 1008 × 734 px to remove photographic margins, then encoded into a real WebP without oversampling.

Composition01

The whites of the snow remain slightly purple

Blues, roses and grays appear in the path, on roofs and along fences. Uniform neutral white would make atmospheric light disappear.

Color02

The houses keep flexible contours

Their shutters, roofs and chimneys are legible, but snow and air envelop them. Reinforce them like an architectural drawing would detach them from the climate.

Matter03

The first character remains a moving mass

His coat and umbrella are constructed by a few deep values. It must remain dark enough to anchor the path, without becoming an isolated portrait.

Documented benchmarks

Three pieces of information specific to this work

Signed Claude Monet 75 lower right, this oil on canvas measures 60.9 × 81.6 cm. It belongs to the Museum of Fine Arts Boston under the 1978.633 inventory and bears the reference Wildenstein 357a.

Location01

Boulevard Saint-Denis near Monet's house

Between 1872 and 1877, the artist lived in Argenteuil. Views of this area show the neighborhood's recent houses, including its residence with pink walls and green shutters, in the middle of a still semi-rural environment.

Season02

Winter 1874 -1875 in Argenteuil

Monet then multiplies the effects of snow around his home. The proximity of the pattern allows him to quickly observe variations in the sky, the passage of residents and changes in color on the snowy ground.

Collection03

Gift of Richard Saltonstall

The painting entered the Museum of Fine Arts Boston in 1978. Its inventory 1978,633, its dimensions and its reference Wildenstein 357a precisely identify this view among the winter landscapes of Argenteuil.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

Fidelity here depends on precise relationships between light, touch, depth and color temperature.

  • Maintain irregular convergence of fences.
  • Vary the whites, mauves and blues of the snow.
  • Keep passers-by legible but without excessive detail.
  • Preserve the yellow sun behind its veil of clouds.

Presentation in your interior

A palette designed with the room

This horizontal stage is suitable for a living room, entrance or office. A dark green, natural wood or bluish gray frame accompanies fences and houses; diffused light enhances the shades of snow and the solar disk.
