À propos de l’œuvre

Au dessus de Vétheuil, effet de printemps, par Claude Monet

Claude Monet · Vétheuil · 1880 · W587

Above Vétheuil, spring effect W587hand painted reproduction

From the heights of Vétheuil, a plum tree in bloom occupies the right half of the canvas while the Seine valley opens to the left. Its light crown, made of pink, white and blue, connects the meadow near to the misty distance of La Roche-Guyon. Painted in the spring of 1880, this oil on canvas measuring 60.4 × 99.8 cm is kept at the Wallraf-Richartz-Museum in Cologne under the number WRM 3620 and corresponds to Wildenstein 587.

Look at the work

A plum tree in bloom connects the nearby meadow to the entire Seine valley

The composition juxtaposes two ladders. On the right, the tree stands a few meters from the viewer and its crown fills the height. On the left, the land descends towards the Seine, an island lined with poplars and the distant village.

The beige preparation of the canvas remains perceptible between certain touches of the foreground. Turquoise greens, purple blues and pinks are placed side by side, while the distance receives paler values which give the atmosphere of spring.

The painting does not choose between close-up and panorama: it makes the plum tree an immediate presence while letting the valley breathe behind its branches.

Composition, touch and light

What Monet builds behind the impression of snapshot

Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.

01

A shared composition without symmetry

The plum tree dominates the right, but the vast open distance to the left balances its weight. The off-center trunk avoids too regular separation.

02

Depth without strong drawing

Differences in size, contrast and temperature are enough to keep the village away. The contours become more blurred as the gaze descends towards the Seine.

03

An open painting in the foreground

Preparation areas emerge between the quick touches of the grass. This material breathing contributes to the brightness and must not be filled.

Reference image

Read this specific version

The single high definition reference image was reduced to 3000 × 1774 px and then encoded as a real WebP. It retains the key and preparation reserves without artificial enlargement.

Composition01

Keep the aerial crown of the plum tree

Flowers should remain separated by intervals of sky and branches; a compact white mass would destroy their lightness.

Color02

Preserve the purple blues of the meadow

These cold accents structure the foreground and respond to the sky without turning the grass into uniform green.

Matter03

Keep the distance very little contrast

La Roche-Guyon and the valley must remain foggy so that the plum tree retains its scale and presence.

Documented benchmarks

Three pieces of information specific to this work

The Wallraf-Richartz-Museum and its research project document Above Vétheuil, spring effect, oil on canvas from 1880, 60.4 × 99.8 cm, signed lower right, WRM 3620 inventory and Wildenstein catalog 587.

Viewpoint01

The valley observed from the heights of Vétheuil

The painting looks towards the Seine and La Roche-Guyon. The nearby plum tree and the distant panorama are treated with almost equal spatial importance.

Matter02

A pink-beige preparation left visible

The museum's technical study highlights the open and sketched execution, particularly in the foreground, where the support directly participates in the colored chord.

Provenance03

A work donated to the museum in 1992

The first known buyer was the collector Camescasse in October 1880; the work then moved to Durand-Ruel and Bernheim-Jeune before entering Wallraf.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

Fidelity here depends on precise relationships between light, touch, depth and color temperature.

  • The Wildenstein 587 version
  • The plum tree in bloom on the right
  • The Seine valley on the left
  • The pinkish beige reserves in the foreground
