À propos de l’œuvre

Bras de Seine près de Giverny, par Claude Monet

Claude Monet · 1897 · MFA Boston 11.1261 · W1481

Morning on the Seine, Boston W1481hand painted reproduction

At daybreak, the Seine becomes an almost immobile mirror. Two curtains of trees meet in the center and repeat in the water, creating a composition close to symmetry. The roses of the sky, the mauves of the mist and the muffled greens blend together without a clear outline: Monet paints less of an identifiable site than a brief balance between light, humidity and reflection.

Look at the work

The trees and their reflection close the view around a small pink opening in the center of the Seine

The left bank forms a rounded mass, dark at its base and lighter in its upper foliage. On the right, the trees descend lower and their reflection extends into the water. The two sides are not identical, but their comparable weight gives the landscape silent stability.

The central passage receives the warmest shades: pale pink, cream and mauve. These colors are reflected in a vertical band which widens towards the foreground. Small horizontal touches suggest the current and prevent the mirror from becoming perfectly smooth.

Monet builds in the morning with very few contrasts: the slightest variation of pink, green or purple becomes a change of light.

Composition, touch and light

What Monet builds behind the impression of snapshot

Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.

01

A slightly offset natural symmetry

The clear axis of the river seems to divide the canvas in two, but the silhouettes of the trees, their heights and their densities differ. This discreet asymmetry keeps the composition alive and avoids too regular a decorative effect.

02

The reflection as the second half of the landscape

Water is not treated as just a foreground. It takes the shapes of the banks, stretches them and fragments them. Reproduction must maintain this precise relationship between vertical silhouettes and horizontal gestures of the current.

03

A deliberately close range

The contrasts in value remain soft. Greens slide towards blue and mauve, while pink cools on contact with the sky. Too strong deviations would destroy the feeling of morning mist.

Reference image

Read this specific version

The only available reference image measures 1600 × 1418 px. It has been re-encoded into a real WebP at its native definition, without artificial enlargement.

Composition01

A very narrow central opening

The distance only occupies a small luminous gap between the trees. However, it is she who gives all the depth, thanks to her vertical repetition in the river.

Color02

Gray pink, sage green and purple

No color is pure. Roses contain gray, greens blue and purples hot passages. This reciprocal neutralization produces the humid atmosphere specific to this version.

Matter03

Melted edges without softness

The contours are softened by numerous small overlapping gestures. The material remains visible, especially in the reflections; it is therefore necessary to avoid a uniform digital fade which would erase the painter's hand.

Documented benchmarks

Three pieces of information specific to this work

This information relates to the Morning on the Seine near Giverny from the Museum of Fine Arts Boston, inventory 11.1261 and Wildenstein 1481.

Identification01

MFA Boston 11.1261, W1481

Dated 1897, this oil on canvas measures 81.3 × 92.7 cm. It is part of the Matinées sur la Seine carried out near Giverny at the end of the 1890s.

A series at daybreak02

The same arm of the Seine under several lights

Monet returns to the pattern when the light changes. The paintings in the series are distinguished by the density of the mist, the opening of the sky and the temperature of the reflections rather than by a significant shift in the point of view.

Collection03

Gift of Mrs. W. Scott Fitz in 1911

The work entered the Museum of Fine Arts Boston in 1911 thanks to a donation from Mrs. W. Scott Fitz. Its number 11.1261 allows this version to be distinguished from other Mornings kept in several museums.

Your reproduction

  • The original ratio of 81.3 × 92.7 cm
  • The pink axis of the sky extended vertically in the current
  • Greens, mauves and blues kept in a soft range without steep blacks
