The road bridge crosses the entire width of the painting behind a port filled with boats and masts. In the center, a yellow floating house with green shutters becomes the main colorful accent; around it, the hulls and their reflections disperse in gray, blue and lilac water. Monet thus brings together nautical leisure activities, modern architecture and a covered atmosphere.

Look at the work

The bridge and docks form a grid around the boats

Two metal arches visible on the left and a clear pile on the right support the bridge deck. Small red and gray touches suggest traffic. Behind, a second horizontal line corresponds to the railway bridge and recalls the rapid industrialization of the banks of the Seine.

In the foreground, the vertical masts cut the long lines of the bridges. Several boats are seen at an angle, while the ocher floating house closes the pool in the center. A strip of green grass in the lower right corner discreetly brings the viewpoint closer to the shore.

Under the gray light, the bridge does not dominate the landscape: it enters the same network of reflections, masts and touches as the boats.

Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.

A modern but flexible geometry

The horizontals of the deck and platforms stabilize the view. They are continually interrupted by masts, oblique hulls and reflections, which prevents the composition from becoming rigid.

The floating house as a colorful home

Its yellow ochres and green shutters focus the eye in the center. This rectangular mass counterbalances the numerous small boats distributed in the water.

A gray day rich in nuances

The sky mixes cream, smoky gray and some cold blues. In the Seine, these tones become silver, lavender and turquoise; overcast weather therefore produces a colorful range, not a monochrome image.

Their structures are based on bluish grays, browns and light reserves. Fine details must remain subordinate to the atmospheric effect.

Reflections extend objects in fragments

Masts, cabins and hulls are not repeated like in a mirror. Their colors break into small horizontal and vertical touches in the water.

The signature is placed at the bottom right

It remains discreet in the green bank and should not attract more attention than the boats in the foreground.

Ailsa Mellon Bruce's legacy

Ailsa Mellon Bruce acquired the painting in 1946. His legacy led him to the National Gallery of Art in 1970, where he was numbered 1970.17.44.
