À propos de l’œuvre

Pont du Carrousel et Louvre, par Vincent van Gogh

Vincent van Gogh June 1886 · Paris, quai de la Seine

The Pont du Carrousel and the Louvre, F221Reproduction of oil painting on canvas

From the left bank quay, Van Gogh watches the old Carrousel bridge cross the Seine in front of the long facades of the Louvre. A floating installation, barges and a few figures occupy the foreground, while the palace blends into a pale yellow and blue light.

Look at the work

The bridge brings together life on the quay, the Seine and the Louvre Palace

The cast iron arches draw a large horizontal curve in the middle of the canvas. They separate the blue-green river from the Louvre, whose pavilions and roofs extend parallel to the upper edge.

In the foreground, a covered construction and several figures stand out on the light quay. A white and red boat slides right under the deck, adding a second direction to the movement of passers-by.

The Pont du Carrousel and the Louvre F221/JH1109 is a 31 × 44 cm oil on canvas painted in Paris in June 1886. It is kept at the Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek in Copenhagen.

Composition, touch and color

Three observations specific to this painting

The composition is frontal but never static. The arches, bank, roofs and boats stack horizontals, while the Louvre towers, bridge piers and figures create vertical accents.

01

Bridge arches form the framework of the image

Their dark curve repeats from left to right and frames fragments of sky reflected in the water. The clear piers divide the river without interrupting its continuity.

02

The Louvre is treated like a long luminous frieze

Van Gogh simplifies the distances between pavilions and roofs. Ocher, green and gray blue are enough to make the palace recognizable behind the traffic of the bridge.

03

The quay gives a daily scale to the monument

Figures in coats, boats and floating huts occupy almost a third of the canvas. The Louvre is therefore not isolated: it belongs to the ordinary activity of the Seine.

Documented benchmarks

Precisely identify the original work

F221/JH1109, the dimensions of 31 × 44 cm and the conservation à la Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek identify this Parisian view from June 1886.

Bridge

Van Gogh paints the old Carrousel Bridge

The visible structure, built in the 19th century with metal arches, was replaced in the 20th century. The current silhouette of the Parisian bridge is therefore different from that of the painting.

Paris

The painting dates from the first months of the Parisian stay

Van Gogh joined his brother Theo in March 1886. In June, his palette already became clearer upon contact with modern painting, but the construction and browns remained close to his Dutch works.

Collection

The original is in Copenhagen

The Ny Carlsberg Foundation documents the 31 × 44 cm oil on canvas under the title The Carousel Bridge and the Louvre and locates it at the Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

The copy must preserve the arches of the old bridge, the row of pavilions of the Louvre, the blue-green Seine, the white and red boat, the covered construction and the figures of the quay.

  • The large metal arches of the Carrousel bridge
  • The pavilions and towers of the Louvre on the horizon
  • The little white boat bordered in red on the Seine
  • The covered cabin and the passers-by in the foreground
  • The touches of lavender blue, cream and ocher from the sky
