À propos de l’œuvre
Le pont de Courbevoie, par Vincent van Gogh
Vincent van Gogh · May -July 1887 · Paris
The Courbevoie Bridge, F304Reproduction of oil painting on canvas
The clear Courbevoie bridge crosses a Seine covered with boats; its arches are reflected in blue-green water streaked with yellow, while tiny figures enliven the bank.
Look at the work
A modern bridge observed from the water
The apron cuts the composition halfway up. Two large arches and a smaller opening are repeated in the reflections, creating a regular alternation of solids and voids.
In the foreground, a dark boat carries two figures. The horizontal and oblique touches of the water mix blue, green, yellow and pink without mechanically reproducing the structure of the bridge.
The Van Gogh Museum indicates that Van Gogh painted this view in a single session, in a series of approximately thirty landscapes and river scenes created along the Seine from May 1887.
Composition, touch and color
Three observations specific to this painting
This small oil on canvas measures 32.1 × 40.5 cm. Its inventory s0086V1962 and its references F304/JH1326 correct any confusion with other bridges painted by Van Gogh.
Reflections before perspective
The museum says Van Gogh focuses on water rather than a perfectly regular perspective. The arches and their reflections remain deliberately flexible.
A touch derived from pointillism
Colored lines and dashes are juxtaposed or superimposed. This free method moves away from the small systematic dots of Seurat and Signac.
Figures on an expressive scale
Walkers and rowers are tiny and poorly proportioned, but their red and dark accents are enough to bring the landscape to life.
Documented benchmarks
Precisely identify the original work
The official notice documents the one-session execution, the Seine series and Van Gogh's personal way of adapting Neo-Impressionist research.
Around thirty views of the Seine
From May 1887, Van Gogh painted bridges, banks and river activities in the surroundings of Paris.
A canvas painted in one session
The speed of work remains visible in the distinct touches and in the deliberately simplified human silhouettes.
F304 and JH1326
The Van Gogh Museum catalog identifies this view under the references F304/JH1326 and the object number s0086V1962.
