The Japanese Bridge, Givernyhand painted reproduction

This dark version of the Japanese bridge concentrates light in the upper left corner. The purple-brown arch passes through almost nocturnal vegetation; beneath it, the green and purple water no longer reflects an open sky but the density of the late Giverny garden.

Look at the work

A yellow gap lights up a bridge almost absorbed by greens and purples

The arch extends horizontally in the upper third. Its left part receives green and orange touches, while the right blends into a large purple-brown vertical. Under the apron, the shadows are never black: they mix deep green, plum, blue and red earth.

The yellow light from the left corner serves as a counterweight to the entire dark mass. In the pool, the small olive, mauve and gray-green horizontals build a tight surface, without panoramic depth. The impasto gives the pattern an almost tactile presence.

Here, the bridge does not cut out the garden: it shares with it the same purple shadows, the same heavy greens and the same bursts of yellow light.

Composition, touch and light

What Monet builds behind the impression of snapshot

Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.

Analysis of The Japanese Bridge, Giverny - Claude Monet
01

Light concentrated in the left corner

The yellow area is small but essential. It must remain luminous without being extended, because the entire tension of the composition depends on its opposition to the dark mass on the right.

02

A purple-brown arch without black

The bridge is assembled by browns, plums, greens and some oranges. Using uniform black would remove vegetation passages and relief from the touch.

03

Water constricted by dark horizontals

The basin should not be thinned out as in the 1899 versions. Its olive greens and purples extend the shadow of the bridge, with only a few light lines.

Details and visual documents

Observe the material and the exact version

The additional images show the difficult-to-read passages in the full view and, where it exists, the actual appearance of the work at the museum.

The ark sinks under the vegetationThe cropping shows the purple-brown layers of the bridge, crossed with greens and small orange touches. The structure appears by density rather than a drawn edge.

Green and purple reflectionsUnder the bridge, the horizontal olive, mauve and gray touches constantly change value. A few yellow shards keep the water surface in shadow.

The main view measures 755 × 655 px, without extrapolation. Details of 500 × 300 px and 500 × 250 px come directly from inventory 5094. All three files have been re-encoded and verified as true WebPs.

Documented benchmarks

Three pieces of information specific to this work

These facts concern this precise version and are verified from the notice of the institution which keeps it.

Identification01

Inventory 5094 of the Marmottan Monet Museum

This oil on canvas of 89 × 100 cm is dated 1918 -1924, unsigned and listed under the number Wildenstein 1927.

Exact version02

A distinct composition of inventory 5093

The museum retains several late Japanese bridges. This sheet concerns precisely the 5094, recognizable by its large dark mass and its yellow gap in the upper left corner.

Transmission03

The legacy of Michel Monet in 1966

Like an important set of paintings remaining in Giverny, the work joined the Marmottan Monet Museum thanks to the legacy of Michel Monet in 1966.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

Fidelity here depends on precise relationships between light, touch, depth and color temperature.

  • The yellow gap limited to the upper left corner
  • Shadows composed of colors without uniform black
  • The arch readable in the middle of the overlaps
  • The deliberately dark tone of the pelvis preserved without automatic lightening

Presentation in your interior

A palette designed with the room

More serious than the bright versions of the pattern, this reproduction is suitable for an ivory, warm brown, forest green or smoky purple wall. Side lighting highlights impasto without reducing dark shades.
