The Japanese bridge no longer stands out against a light garden: its dark arch is invaded by a trellis of reds, greens, yellows and blues. The thick material unites the pool, the plants and the architecture in a late, almost expressionist vision.

Look at the work

Giverny's familiar arch resists amid vegetation turned matter

The curve of the bridge crosses the upper part, but its outline is interrupted by verticals and diagonals of foliage. The dark center under the arch creates the main depth. Around it, touches of red and yellow bring the plants closer to the foreground while the blues and greens maintain the space of the pool.

Monet no longer seeks the light transparency of his 1899 views. The layers overlap, change direction and reveal repetitions. At the bottom, large reds, yellows and greens cross the water; at the top, the architecture blends into a dense network which makes the pattern visible only in fragments.

The bridge is less drawn than found in the painting: its arch emerges from a garden where each color seems to have grown in front, behind and through the structure.

A fragmented rather than redesigned arch

The dark curve must remain interrupted by the foliage. A continuous, clean outline would give this version a precision foreign to Monet's late vision.

Dense matter with multiple directions

Vertical, oblique and horizontal touches stack without completely blending. This relief produces the rhythm of the work and must be translated into a real oil painting.

Reds and yellows in the heart of the pool

Warm colors are not simple decorative accents: they advance the vegetation and maintain the intensity of the lower part facing the dark arch.

One of twenty-four views of the bridge painted between 1918 and 1924

The museum catalog links this painting to a late group of twenty-four paintings of the Japanese bridge, very different from the first light series of 1899 -1900.

Provenance03

From Michel Monet to the Audrey Jones Beck collection

After Michel Monet, the painting notably went through Katia Granoff, Knoedler, Walter Bareiss and Fourcade Droll. Audrey Jones Beck offered it to the Houston museum in 1976.
