Le Pont japonais, par Claude Monet

The Japanese Bridge, Givernyhand painted reproduction

In version 5106, the arch can be seen in the middle of a red, yellow, blue-gray and sea green material applied with almost brutal energy. The flowers seem to fall in long verticals while the pool opens in light bands under the bridge.

Look at the work

The ark almost disappears behind a flowering of vertical gestures

The curve of the bridge crosses the center in dark red, purple and green. It is fragmented by yellow and white stems which descend from the upper part. On the left, a lighter area lets the composition breathe; on the right, the reds and blues form a much denser mass.

In the pool, Monet places horizontal cream, blue gray and green bands, then covers them with touches of red, yellow and turquoise. The material does not imitate smooth water: it retains the repetitions, hesitations and contradictory directions which make this painting almost abstract.

The motif remains a bridge over a pool, but the real scene is now the vision itself: overflowing colors, intersecting gestures, and light dissolving objects.

Composition, touch and light

What Monet builds behind the impression of snapshot

Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.

Analysis of The Japanese Bridge, Giverny - Claude Monet
01

An arch perceptible in fragments

The reds and purples of the bridge should not be combined into a regular line. The curve appears, disappears under the flowers, then returns to the right half.

02

Verticals that suggest flowering

Yellow, white and blue descend from the top like stems or clusters. Their rhythm must remain irregular to preserve the energy of the late touch.

03

A basin built in opposite layers

The long, light bands are covered in shorter, warmer gestures. The relief of these overlays matters as much as the final color.

Details and visual documents

Observe the material and the exact version

The additional images show the difficult-to-read passages in the full view and, where it exists, the actual appearance of the work at the museum.

The dark red arch beneath the flowersThe detail reveals the purple and red curve crossed by yellow, white and blue verticals. The gestures overlap instead of respecting the contours of the bridge.

The impasto of the pelvisAt the bottom, blue grays, greens and creams are taken up by thick reds and yellows. Brush directions prevent water from becoming a smooth decorative surface.

The main view measures 1500 × 1148 px. Details of 1120 × 500 px and 1080 × 400 px come directly from inventory 5106. No files have been enlarged; all three images are true verified WebPs.

Documented benchmarks

Three pieces of information specific to this work

These facts concern this precise version and are verified from the notice of the institution which keeps it.

Identification01

Inventory 5106, Wildenstein catalog 1933

The Marmottan Monet Museum preserves this oil on canvas measuring 89 × 116 cm, unsigned and dated between 1918 and 1924.

Late vision02

A painting linked to Monet's cataract

The museum notice highlights the new brutality of the application and the difficulty in distinguishing a completed state. The painter's altered vision contributes to the predominance of colors and the almost indecipherable character of the motif.

Transmission03

The legacy of Michel Monet in 1966

Remaining in the artist's family, the painting entered the Marmottan Monet Museum through the legacy of Michel Monet. It belongs to the exceptional group of the ultimate Japanese Bridges preserved in Paris.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

Fidelity here depends on precise relationships between light, touch, depth and color temperature.

  • The exact version Marmottan 5106, Wildenstein 1933
  • The curve of the bridge visible only intermittently
  • The floral verticals kept free and irregular
  • Thick superpositions of the pelvis without smoothing

Presentation in your interior

A palette designed with the room

Reds, yellows, turquoise and purples give this reproduction a very expressive presence. It becomes a focal point on a cream, midnight blue, dark green or terracotta wall, with a side light revealing the material.
