À propos de l’œuvre

Le pont japonais, par Claude Monet

Claude Monet · 1918 -1924 · Marmottan Monet Museum · 5093

The Japanese Bridge, Givernyhand painted reproduction

In this late version, the arch of the Japanese bridge is almost swallowed up by a red, pink, green and yellow garden. The reserves of light canvas pass through the material and give air to a composition where the pond, plants and wood of the bridge no longer separate clearly.

Look at the work

An arch still readable in the middle of a garden that has become a network of colors

The bridge occupies the center in the form of a green and red-brown curve. Its structure is never closed by a continuous outline: light verticals pass in front of the opening and touches of foliage cut the arch. The depth rests on this superposition rather than on a drawn perspective.

The bottom of the canvas concentrates coral reds, pinks and some acidic yellows, placed in more horizontal bands to evoke water. At the top, the keys become sinuous and vertical. The areas of light canvas are not gaps to fill: they contribute to the vibration of this precise version.

The familiar pattern is not erased: Monet makes it appear in fragments, at the exact point where the arch, reflections and vegetation begin to share the same material.

Composition, touch and light

What Monet builds behind the impression of snapshot

Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.

Analysis of The Japanese Bridge, Giverny - Claude Monet
01

An arch built in colorful fragments

Deep greens and red browns should remain discontinuous. Properly redrawing the curve would destroy the balance between the bridge and the plants passing in front of it.

02

Clear active reserves

The light bottom crosses the branches and the pelvis. Faithful reproduction preserves these breaths and avoids uniformly filling each interval with paint.

03

A red pool rather than blue

Coral and pink horizontals dominate the water, with only a few greens and yellows. This late choice gives the work its warmth and must be preserved without artificial saturation.

Details and visual documents

Observe the material and the exact version

The additional images show the difficult-to-read passages in the full view and, where it exists, the actual appearance of the work at the museum.

The green arch crossed by light verticals - detail of The Japanese Bridge, Giverny - Claude Monet
The green arch crossed by light verticalsThe close-up shows how several dark green and red-brown lines are enough to bring the bridge into existence. Light and pink touches pass in front of the structure and prevent any rigid outline.
The red, pink and yellow pool - detail of The Japanese Bridge, Giverny - Claude Monet
The red, pink and yellow pelvisThe bottom horizontal bands are constantly changing density. Clear reserves and yellow flashes keep the light in the middle of coral reds.

The main view measures 735 × 641 px, maximum resolution of the exact file selected. The details of 460 × 310 px and 460 × 270 px are direct cropping, without enlargement. All three files were controlled as true decodable WebPs.

Documented benchmarks

Three pieces of information specific to this work

These facts concern this precise version and are verified from the notice of the institution which keeps it.

Identification01

Inventory 5093 of the Marmottan Monet Museum

This oil on canvas of 89 × 100 cm is dated 1918 -1924. It is listed under Wildenstein number 1928 and is not signed.

Late series02

The bridge recaptured after the first views in 1899

Monet returned intensely to the Japanese bridge at the end of his life. The arch then becomes a point of support within denser, freer and much less descriptive compositions.

Transmission03

The legacy of Michel Monet in 1966

Remaining in the artist's family, the painting entered the Marmottan Monet Museum with the bequest of Michel Monet, son of Claude Monet, in 1966.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

Fidelity here depends on precise relationships between light, touch, depth and color temperature.

  • The central arch preserved without regular outline
  • Clear canvas reserves left visible
  • The transition from the vertical touches of the garden to the horizontals of the pond
  • Reds and pinks balanced by deep greens, without supersaturation

Presentation in your interior

A palette designed with the room

This very colorful reproduction is suitable for a cream, clay, deep green or powder pink wall. Its almost square format becomes a focal point in a living room or entrance; soft side light reveals changes in brush direction.
