Le pont Langlois, par Vincent van Gogh
Vincent van Gogh · March 1888 · Arles
The Pont de Langlois with road along the canal, F400Reproduction of oil painting on canvas
The Langlois drawbridge stands above the canal under a very light gray sky. A sandy road starts from the foreground and heads to the left, while blue-green water, grassy embankments and a few low houses balance the wooden structure.
Look at the work
A large diagonal leads from the path to the bridge mechanism
Van Gogh chose a location where the strip of land and the road occupied almost the entire left half. Their oblique escape leads directly to the stone piers and the two large arms of the drawbridge.
The canal opens to the right into a pale blue surface bordered by green lines. On the opposite bank, white linen is spread to whiten, but no washerwoman appears in this quieter version.
The Langlois Bridge with the road along the F400/JH1371 canal is a 59.6 × 73.6 cm oil on canvas painted in Arles in March 1888. It is kept at the Van Gogh Museum under number s0027V1962.
Composition, touch and color
Three observations specific to this painting
The precision of the structure does not prevent a very free composition. The bridge rests on sharp horizontals and verticals, while the diagonal path and quick touches of the grass open wide the foreground.
The diagonal route controls all the depth
It starts from the lower left corner, runs along the canal then disappears behind the bridge. This movement, brought closer to Japanese compositions by the museum, gives the landscape an immediate perspective.
The arms of the bridge cut out the sky like a graphic sign
The wood painted gray-green forms two almost symmetrical silhouettes. Cables, pulleys and counterweights remain readable without becoming a dry technical drawing.
The gray sky softens the oppositions of yellow and blue
Light is not that of bright full sun. The ochres of the path, the blue-green of the water and the orange houses remain clear, unified by the pale atmosphere.
Documented benchmarks
Precisely identify the original work
F400/JH1371, inventory s0027V1962 and the diagonal of the path distinguish this version of the bridge from those with washerwomen or with a car crossing the structure.
Van Gogh returned several times to the same Arles bridge
The Langlois bridge crossed the canal from Arles to Bouc. Its double-leavage framework recalled Dutch works and offered several points of view to the painter.
The canvas is painted under a gray sky
The museum notice emphasizes this covered light. It explains the restraint of colors and distinguishes the work from the more dazzling images often associated with Provence.
The laundry is present, but the washerwomen have disappeared
White linen dries or whitens on the remote bank. In an earlier composition, Van Gogh had included women working on the canal; here the site appears almost empty.
Your reproduction
What the painter must preserve
The copy must preserve the diagonal of the path, the piles of stone, the two articulated arms, their cables, the white linen on the bank, the blue-green water and the "Vincent" signature in the foreground.
- The sandy road that crosses the entire foreground
- The two large gray-green arms of the drawbridge
- The black cables and small pulleys of the mechanism
- The white linen lying on the opposite bank
- The dark signature placed at the bottom left
