The canal, the bridge and the cart make up a landscape in full movement
The left bank begins near the viewer and leads directly to the bridge deck. The two yellow uprights rise above the horizon line, while the cart marks the crossing point.
On the left, women and white linen enliven the water's edge; on the right, the ocher and green bank opens up a calmer space. The blue and yellow reflections of the canal connect these two asymmetrical halves.

It starts from the lower edge and tightens under the deck. The gaze naturally follows the water before meeting the cart which crosses the deck.

The yellow of the bridge responds to the blue of the sky and the water
This frank opposition makes the work immediately readable. The same colors reappear in small touches in the banks and reflections.

The washerwomen give a human scale
Their curved silhouettes, the white linen and the boat indicate the distance which separates the foreground from the bridge. They also transform the view into a lived scene.

Precisely identify the original work
F397/JH1368, the KM 111.056 inventory and the 54 × 64 cm format identify Otterlo's version with washerwomen and cart. It should not be confused with F400, kept at the Van Gogh Museum.
