The Argenteuil road bridge crosses the entire upper part of the canvas. A dark arch opens onto the Seine and the distance, while a massive pile of stone stands to the right. On the left, a boat and its mast occupy the sheltered area; in the center, the luminous water leads the view under the bridge. Monet makes this modern infrastructure a monumental setting around the river landscape.
Look at the work
The deck and the metal frame form a very dark strip at the top. The large curve of the arch descends towards a stone pile located to the right of the center, whose vertical volume separates the waters near the passage towards the other bank. Some silhouettes and light accents appear on the bridge.
On the left, a small white boat stands out in front of the trees and a square building. Its mast crosses the arch to the apron and connects the different planes. The water, painted in short touches of blue, green, pink and white, becomes lighter under the opening and leads towards distant boats.
The industrial mass does not close the landscape: its arch on the contrary concentrates the depth, reflections and movement of the river.
Composition, touch and light
Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.
Monet places the viewer very close to the bridge, at water level. The work is partially cut by the edges and dominates the stage; this choice transforms a topographical view into a direct experience of the scale and weight of architecture.
The stone pillar is offset to the right. It responds to the thin mast of the left boat and separates two openings of unequal width. This asymmetrical balance keeps the gaze moving between the zones of shadow and light.
The Deutsches Historisches Museum file RMG01125 identifies the painting, its dimensions and its historical numbers. It recorded its seizure in France during the Occupation, its passage through the Munich Central Collecting Point and its return to France after 1945.

The documented color reproduction of this precise version measures 280 × 208 px. It was encoded as a real WebP at its native definition, without artificial enlargement; the official archive file also provides the identifiers Mü 5800 and RMG 1273.
Deep blues, grays, browns and lighter touches describe its framework. These variations allow us to understand the metal structure even in the darkest area.
Its faces do not receive the same light. Preserving their value differences is essential to maintain volume and the feeling of low angle.
The wide touches in the foreground become smaller under the arch. This change of rhythm moves the Seine back and prevents the water from resembling a uniform pattern.
Documented benchmarks
Painted in 1874, this oil on canvas measures 54 × 73 cm. It is listed as Wildenstein 315 and documented in the German archives under the numbers Mü 5800 and RMG 1273.
The Argenteuil road bridge was destroyed during the Franco-Prussian conflict then rebuilt from 1871. Monet painted several views in 1874, the year of the first impressionist exhibition.
The Deutsches Historisches Museum file cites Salomon Flavian's private collection as an earlier provenance. The painting was then seized in France and delivered to the Einsatzstab Reichsleiter Rosenberg on November 25, 1942.
After its registration at the Munich Central Collecting Point under number 5800, the work was returned to France. The archive sheet today constitutes the most precise institutional source for this journey.
