The Argenteuil road bridge crosses the entire composition with its stone arches and metal framework. Under this modern line, sailboats and boats are spread over an intense blue Seine. Monet combines the reconstructed work, nautical leisure activities and the hills of Orgemont in an image where industrial geometry remains crossed by wind, reflections and clouds.
Look at the work
Two massive piers divide the bridge into large openings. Between them, the metal arch draws a dark semi-circle, reinforced by a succession of thinner diagonals. On the apron, a few keys indicate passers-by and vehicles, reminding us that this architecture belongs to contemporary life.
In the foreground, the sailboats are moored in cobalt blue and turquoise water. Their yellow and orange masts rise in front of the arches, while the hulls and piers extend into discontinuous vertical reflections. Beyond the bridge, the Orgemont bank appears under a wide open sky.
The bridge does not interrupt the landscape: its arches frame the water and the bank, then its metal lines mingle with the masts like a second form of drawing.
Composition, touch and light
Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.
The deck crosses almost exactly the width of the canvas and places the horizon very high. This mass could crush the scene; Monet lightens it thanks to the arches, the sky seen between the crosspieces and the sailboats which visually cross the structure.
The masts pass in front of the stones and the frame, connecting the water to the sky. Their warm yellows contrast with the blues of the river and prevent the composition from being reduced to two horizontal bands.
Ultramarine blue, turquoise, green, white and black are juxtaposed in visible touches. The reflections of the batteries remain dark, but they are interrupted by bursts of light which give the water its mobility.

The visual corresponds to the Bridge over the Seine in Argenteuil, inventory 8642 of the Bayerische Staatsgemäldesammlungen and Wildenstein number 313. The image of 1024 × 749 px is preserved at its native definition in a real WebP file.
The black and gray crosspieces must remain legible without being drawn with regular lines. Monet suggests the engineering of the bridge by rapid segments which allow the color of the sky to circulate.
Yellows, greens, blues and purples shape the stones according to light and their proximity to water. This variation avoids heavy volume and connects the batteries to reflections.
Each hull has a different orientation, mast and reflection. Their exact position maintains the balance between the large masses of the bridge and the mobility of the Seine.
Documented benchmarks
Painted in 1874, this oil on canvas measures 59.8 × 81.4 cm. It is kept by the Bayerische Staatsgemäldesammlungen under inventory 8642 and bears the Wildenstein number 313.
The Argenteuil road bridge was destroyed during the Franco-Prussian War. Rebuilt and reopened in 1872, it became for Monet a visible sign of the rapid modernization of the Paris suburbs.
Monet looks upstream at the Seine. Between the arches appear the bank and the heights of Orgemont; this real depth gives the bridge a function of frame rather than simple barrier.
The work entered the Bavarian collections in 1912 thanks to the Tschudi legacy, financed here by Eduard Arnhold and Robert von Mendelssohn. It is one of the decisive acquisitions of modern French painting for Munich.
