Look at the work

A dizzying perspective between the quay, the Rhône and the bridge

Van Gogh places the viewer very close to the characters and the parapet. The young girl in the center, the men on the left, the staircase and the ramp form several lines which quickly tilt towards the river.

The bridge closes the upper half of the painting, but its piers allow water and boats to circulate. The large yellow-green mass of the Rhône contrasts with the Lilac quay, the almost black figures and the orange accents at the back.

Painted in Arles around June 17, 1888, Le Pont de Trinquetaille is an oil on canvas measuring 65 × 81 cm, referenced F426/JH1468. This version belongs to a private collection.

Composition, touch and color

Three observations specific to this painting

The painting combines a very high point of view with brightly colored planes. Its depth does not come from a progressive modeling, but from sharp diagonals, contrasting scales and deliberately arbitrary colors.

01

The quay plunges towards the river

The red edge, yellow parapet and blue staircase converge abruptly, producing an unstable depth that draws the gaze towards the boats.

02

The characters carry the human drama

The isolated young girl in the center and the dark silhouettes leaning against the parapet give the urban view a more intense social presence than a simple walk.

03

Absinthe dominates the sky and water

Van Gogh himself describes the Rhône and the absinthe-colored sky, opposed to the intense blue of the bridge, the lilac of the quay and small orange and Veronese green notes.

Documented benchmarks

Precisely identify the original work

Christie's sales notice brings together Van Gogh's dating, dimensions, catalog references and several descriptions in his letters.

Dating

Around June 17, 1888

A letter addressed to John Peter Russell connects the canvas to a view of the river with its greenish-yellow sky painted that day.

Letter

A composition thought of in colors

In Theo, Van Gogh lists the sky and the absinthe-colored Rhône, the Lilac quay, the black figures, the blue bridge and the orange and green Veronese accents.

Distinction

The F426 version, not F481

This panoramic view of June, with quay and figures, should not be confused with the other Pont de Trinquetaille painted up close in October 1888.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

The copy must preserve the plunging perspective, the scale relationship between the figures and the river, the blue of the bridge, the pink-lilac quay and the unusual yellow-green of the sky and the water.

  • The girl in the center
  • The pink quay on a steep diagonal
  • The staircase going down to the Rhône
  • The blue metal bridge
  • Yellow-green water and boats

An urban view of Arles, radical and vibrant

Absinthe yellow, dark blue, earth pink and bright green create a landscape that is more expressive than naturalistic. The horizontal format brings great energy above a sofa or console.
