À propos de l’œuvre

Le pont de Waterloo, par Claude Monet

Claude Monet · 1903 · Worcester Art Museum · W1568

Waterloo Bridge, Worcester W1568hand painted reproduction

A line of dark blue chimneys stands behind Waterloo Bridge, while pink and purple smoke almost erases the buildings. The bridge cuts the canvas in the middle, then its arches sink into a blue-gray Thames crossed by boats and short reflections. The photograph taken at the museum also shows the golden frame and the actual surface of this 1903 version.

Look at the work

Industrial chimneys emerge from the mist before the bridge becomes clearer

The sky takes up more than half of the composition. Monet superimposes mauve grays, pale pinks and milky blues without demarcating the clouds. The high chimneys in the center are the only frankly vertical elements; their contours, however, remain porous, as if absorbed by the London atmosphere.

The deck of the bridge forms a cold band just above the middle. A succession of small green, red, orange and black touches suggests traffic. Further down, the arches open into dark water where two light boats and a few pink highlights provide the scale of the scene.

The structure of the bridge remains legible, but everything around it - smoke, sky, buildings and water - shares the same vibrant material.

Composition, touch and light

What Monet builds behind the impression of snapshot

Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.

Analysis of Waterloo Bridge, Worcester W1568 - Claude Monet
01

An industrial silhouette built by values

Fireplaces are never black. They change from slate blue to purple and dissolve into pink halos; their difference in height is enough to punctuate the entire sky.

02

Traffic reduced to a colored frieze

On the apron, vehicles and passers-by are tiny. Green, red and orange accents should remain separate, without being transformed into overly detailed objects.

03

Arches almost swallowed up in the Thames

The piles are extended by short vertical reflections, then disappear into horizontal touches of the water. The clearest contrast is concentrated under the central openings.

Details and visual documents

The additional images show the difficult-to-read passages in the full view and, where it exists, the actual appearance of the work at the museum.

The actual photograph taken at the Worcester Art Museum measures 3,184 × 2,332 px and retains the frame and visible surface of the canvas. The two native details measure 1,500 × 1,000 px and 1,600 × 1,050 px. No files have been artificially enlarged; all three media are real WebPs.

Documented benchmarks

Three pieces of information specific to this work

These facts concern this precise version and are verified from the notice of the institution which keeps it.

Identification01

Worcester 1910.37, Wildenstein 1568

The Worcester Art Museum titles the work Waterloo Bridge and dates it from 1903. This oil on canvas measures 65.4 × 92.9 cm and corresponds to number 1568 of the Wildenstein catalog raisonné.

Viewpoint02

London observed from the Savoy Hotel

Monet works facing the Thames from a room at the Savoy Hotel. He takes over the bridge at different times in order to follow the mist, industrial fumes and variations of light rather than producing a fixed topographical description.

Modern pattern03

Rail, factories and navigation combined

The painting combines traffic on the bridge, chimneys on the south bank and river boats. These contemporary signs remain identifiable while being subject to the same colorful fog as the sky and water.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

Fidelity here depends on precise relationships between light, touch, depth and color temperature.

  • The exact version of the Worcester Art Museum, 1910.37 and W1568
  • The original ratio of 65.4 × 92.9 cm
  • Chimneys kept distinct without hardening their contours
  • The little colorful touches of the bridge and the boats preserved at their right scale

Presentation in your interior

A palette designed with the room

Slate blue, mauve, dusty pink, gray green and pale gold make up a very soft urban light. This horizontal reproduction matches linen, warm gray or mist blue walls and naturally finds its place above a sofa, desk or console.
