Le Pont de Waterloo. Effet de brouillard, par Claude Monet

Claude Monet · 1903 · Thames, Waterloo Bridge and London fog

The Waterloo Bridge, fog effecthand painted reproduction

The bridge, barges and chimneys do not disappear: they become blue presences inside a mist where water and sky share the same light.

Look at the work

London becomes almost monochrome, but never still

From the Savoy Hotel, Monet observes the Waterloo Bridge from above. The arches cross the center of the painting, the barges slide over the Thames and the chimneys of the south bank rise into the fog like slightly darker verticals.

The palette tightened around blues, mauves and grays does not eliminate depth. She builds it by degrees: the more sustained surface of the river, the strip of the bridge, then the buildings gradually absorbed by the atmosphere.

Fog is not a veil placed in front of London: for Monet, it becomes the very material which connects the bridge, industry, water and the sky.

Composition, touch and light

What Monet builds behind the impression of snapshot

Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.

Analysis of The Waterloo Bridge, fog effect - Claude Monet
01

Arches as a measure

The curves of the bridge give a stable structure in the middle of the dissolved shapes. Their repetition makes it possible to evaluate the distance despite the absence of clear contours.

02

Almost ghost chimneys

The industrial verticals can be seen above the bridge. Monet transforms the pollution and steam of the modern city into variations in colored density.

03

Light without visible source

No sun is drawn. The clarity diffuses throughout the canvas and changes the tones from blue-green to lilac, then to pinkish gray.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

Fidelity here depends on precise relationships between light, touch, depth and color temperature.

  • Atmospheric continuity between water and sky
  • Readable arches without hard outline
  • Chimneys visible by density differences
  • Purple and green shades within the dominant blue
