À propos de l’œuvre

Le pont de Waterloo, effet rose, par Claude Monet

Claude Monet · 1904 · Washington 1983.1.28 · W1583

The Waterloo Bridge, pink effect W1583hand painted reproduction

Waterloo Bridge passes through an atmosphere of aquamarine, turquoise and pink. Its apricot-colored arches are reflected in the Thames, where the same tones mingle in broad touches. Preserved in Washington under the 1983.1.28 inventory, this version is Wildenstein 1583.

Look at the work

A pink bridge suspended in the turquoise mist

The apron cuts the composition near the middle and leaks slightly to the right. Four low arches structure this horizontal passage. Behind them, a few vertical lines are enough to evoke the buildings and chimneys of the south bank.

The sky combines light blue, sea green and turquoise. The bridge receives warmer roses and apricots, taken up in the river. This repetition of colors unites air and water while maintaining the construction of the bridge.

W1583 transforms modern infrastructure into a pastel agreement: architecture is held together by color more than by design.

Composition, touch and light

What Monet builds behind the impression of snapshot

Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.

01

Washington's 1983.1.28 version

The National Gallery of Art documents an oil on canvas measuring 65.5 × 92.7 cm. It is signed lower right and corresponds to Wildenstein number 1583.

02

A painting also called Pink Effect

The bibliography and exhibitions used the title Waterloo Bridge, Pink Effect. This name describes the apricot pink arches which immediately distinguish this version.

03

From the artist to the Mellon collection

Durand-Ruel and Bernheim-Jeune bought the painting from Monet in December 1920. It then entered the collection of Paul and Bunny Mellon, then was offered to the museum in 1983.

Reference image

Read this specific version

Only one image is used: the exact view of W1583, preserved as a real WebP of 2,200 × 1,552 px, without artificial enlargement.

Composition01

Four arches in a slight diagonal

The apron appears almost horizontal but moves back to the right. This tiny inclination gives depth and must remain visible in the reproduction.

Color02

Turquoise, aquamarine, rose and apricot

Pastel colors keep distinct temperatures. The bridge advances thanks to warm tones, while the sky and the smoke blend into the blue-green ones.

Matter03

Wide and visible keys

The water does not mechanically reflect the bridge. The colors shift and fragment, producing a moving surface that must remain energetic.

Documented benchmarks

Three pieces of information specific to this work

The National Gallery of Art keeps this painting under inventory 1983.1.28; its dimensions are 65.5 × 92.7 cm and its catalog number is Wildenstein 1583.

Identification01

Waterloo Bridge, pink effect, W1583

This oil on canvas from 1904 bears the signature Claude Monet at the bottom right. Its pastel palette explains the historical subtitle Pink Effect.

Collection02

National Gallery of Art, 1983.1.28

Mr. and Mrs. Paul Mellon donated the work to the museum in 1983. The institutional notice documents its provenance since Monet.

Series03

Waterloo Bridge from the Savoy Hotel

Monet observes the bridge from his Savoy room, high up on the north bank. It varies the canvases with time, traffic, smoke and fog density.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

Fidelity here depends on precise relationships between light, touch, depth and color temperature.

  • The exact version of Washington, 1983.1.28 and Wildenstein 1583
  • The original horizontal format of 65.5 × 92.7 cm
  • Apricot pink arches in a turquoise atmosphere
  • The colored reflections which extend the bridge without rigid symmetry
