Waterloo Bridge appears in a blue-gray harmony crossed by pink, orange and green. The arches remain visible but their contours dissolve in the mist; the chimneys on the opposite bank rise like vertical shadows, while the Thames takes on the same colors in more horizontal touches.

Look at the work

The bridge and the industrial city emerge by degrees in a blue-gray light

The apron cuts the canvas slightly below the middle. Three light arches open into a denser blue mass, and the piers extend into the water in short vertical bands. A few pink and green accents on the bridge suggest traffic without individualizing passers-by.

The opposite bank is reduced to chimneys and blue-green buildings, almost the same value as the sky. Touches of orange and pink, slightly streaked across the surface, warm the mist. In the water, deeper greens give weight to the foreground.

Gray weather doesn't erase color: it allows Monet to circulate the same blues, pinks and greens between architecture, air and water.

Fireplaces and buildings appear in layers of blue and green. Their shapes must remain incomplete, as if seen through colored vapor.

Warm accents placed on gray

The technical catalog indicates pink and orange touches slightly streaked in the sky. They give vibration without transforming the work into a sunset.

This oil on canvas measuring 65.4 × 92.6 cm is dated 1900. It is signed and dated Claude Monet 1900 at the bottom left, in a mixture of blue and green paints.

Historical title02

Presented as Gray Time in 1904

The title used by the Art Institute takes up that of the first exhibition in the series at Durand-Ruel in Paris, in May 1904. The catalog raisonné classifies the painting under number 1557.

Working method03

From the Savoy Hotel to the Giverny workshop

Monet watched Waterloo Bridge in the morning from a window on the fifth floor of the Savoy Hotel. He then took the London paintings back to his studio and refused to deliver them before being satisfied with the whole thing.
