À propos de l’œuvre

Le pont à Argenteuil, un jour gris, par Claude Monet

Claude Monet · The marina under a silver sky · National Gallery of Art

The Pont d'Argenteuil, gray day W316hand painted reproduction

The road bridge crosses the entire width of the painting behind a port filled with boats and masts. In the center, a yellow floating house with green shutters becomes the main colorful accent; around it, the hulls and their reflections disperse in gray, blue and lilac water. Monet thus brings together nautical leisure activities, modern architecture and a covered atmosphere.

Look at the work

The bridge and docks form a grid around the boats

Two metal arches visible on the left and a clear pile on the right support the bridge deck. Small red and gray touches suggest traffic. Behind, a second horizontal line corresponds to the railway bridge and recalls the rapid industrialization of the banks of the Seine.

In the foreground, the vertical masts cut the long lines of the bridges. Several boats are seen at an angle, while the ocher floating house closes the pool in the center. A strip of green grass in the lower right corner discreetly brings the viewpoint closer to the shore.

Under the gray light, the bridge does not dominate the landscape: it enters the same network of reflections, masts and touches as the boats.

Composition, touch and light

What Monet builds behind the impression of snapshot

Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.

01

A modern but flexible geometry

The horizontals of the deck and platforms stabilize the view. They are continually interrupted by masts, oblique hulls and reflections, which prevents the composition from becoming rigid.

02

The floating house as a colorful home

Its yellow ochres and green shutters focus the eye in the center. This rectangular mass counterbalances the numerous small boats distributed in the water.

03

A gray day rich in nuances

The sky mixes cream, smoky gray and some cold blues. In the Seine, these tones become silver, lavender and turquoise; overcast weather therefore produces a colorful range, not a monochrome image.

Reference image

Read this specific version

The image exactly reproduces the 1970.17.44 inventory of the National Gallery of Art, Wildenstein version 316. The very high definition public file was limited to 3,000 × 2,259 px and encoded in WebP to maintain a sharp zoom.

Composition01

The bridges remain legible without black contours

Their structures are based on bluish grays, browns and light reserves. Fine details must remain subordinate to the atmospheric effect.

Color02

Reflections extend objects in fragments

Masts, cabins and hulls are not repeated like in a mirror. Their colors break into small horizontal and vertical touches in the water.

Matter03

The signature is placed at the bottom right

It remains discreet in the green bank and should not attract more attention than the boats in the foreground.

Documented benchmarks

Three pieces of information specific to this work

Painted around 1876, this oil on canvas measuring 61 × 80.3 cm is kept in the National Gallery of Art under the 1970.17.44 inventory and classified Wildenstein 316.

Argenteuil01

Nautical leisure in front of the modern city

Monet does not remove bridges, quays or traffic signs. These constructions are as much part of the truth of the place as the water, the sky and the pleasure boats.

Composition02

Vertical masts versus horizontal aprons

The National Gallery highlights the amount of detail preserved in the bridge. Monet, however, orders them in broad, simple lines to which the masts and docks respond.

Collection03

Ailsa Mellon Bruce's legacy

Ailsa Mellon Bruce acquired the painting in 1946. His legacy led him to the National Gallery of Art in 1970, where he was numbered 1970.17.44.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

Fidelity here depends on precise relationships between light, touch, depth and color temperature.

  • Keep the deck just below half the height.
  • Keep the yellow house as the colored center.
  • Vary the gray blues and lilacs of the water.
  • Distribute the masts without transforming them into too regular lines.

Presentation in your interior

A palette designed with the room

Its silver grays, muted greens and horizontal format are suitable for a living room, office or library. A smoked oak, stone gray or patinated bronze frame underlines the modernity of the bridge and the softness of the atmosphere.
