The Pont Neuf W193hand painted reproduction

A wet roadway runs along the Seine under an almost monochrome sky. Carruages, pedestrians and umbrellas cross Place Dauphine while the Pont Neuf and its parapet advance to the right. Returning to Paris in the fall of 1871, Monet transformed this cold and rainy day into a study of gray animated by reflections, rapid movements and a few accents of color.

A symphony of gray circulates Paris despite the rain

The edge of the quay enters into the composition from the lower right corner. Its clear parapet separates the humid traffic of the Seine, where a few boats and white smoke can be guessed. On the left, the facades of Place Dauphine form a compact mass of blues, ochres and grays.

Black and red carruages, horses and silhouettes are distributed throughout the roadway. Their vertical reflections stretch into the wet ground, then dissolve into the wide beige and pink passages. In the center, the small equestrian statue of Henry IV remains deliberately reduced in the hustle and bustle of the city.

The monument is not the real center of the canvas: Monet entrusts the leading role to the continuous movement of the street, the damp pavement and the gray atmosphere.

An urban view built without a dominant monument

The houses, bridge and statue remain on a modest scale. This restraint directs attention to ordinary traffic and makes the continuity of Paris the main subject.

Rain transforms the ground into a reflective surface

Brown, pink, gray and green extend under the figures with vertical touches. These reflections do not exactly double the shapes: they stretch them and make the humidity of the paving stone sensitive.

A restricted palette after returning to Paris

The Dallas Museum of Art describes the canvas as a study close to gray. The hot and cold variations inside the grays, however, prevent the image from becoming uniform and highlight the rare reds.

The sky should remain calm but not flat

Long horizontal touches mix warm gray, blue and beige. They form a continuous cloud ceiling whose subtle gaps give the painting its full atmosphere.

Figures are quick and individualized signs

A few black, red, green or blue accents are enough to distinguish pedestrians, umbrellas and teams. Excessive precision would cause you to lose the impression of traffic seen in the rain.

The parapet organizes the perspective

Its clear mass descends towards the foreground and clearly separates the roadway from the river. Its angle must be preserved to give the scene its depth and balance.

Monet returned to Paris in the fall of 1871 after more than a year spent in England and the Netherlands. The rainy view stands out strongly from its brighter Parisian scenes of 1866 -1867.

The oldest bridge in Paris is integrated into pedestrian, car and boat traffic. The museum notice emphasizes this idea of urban continuity rather than a monumental celebration.

An oil signed by Monet's initials

The artist does not date the canvas and the sign with his initials, a process he uses for certain fully resolved oil studies. The deliberately open forms accentuate the speed of perception.
