Pont sous la pluie, d'après Hiroshige, par Vincent van Gogh

Vincent van Gogh · October -November 1887 · Paris

Bridge in the rain after Hiroshige, F372Reproduction of oil painting on canvas

In the heavy rain, passers-by cross the Ohashi Bridge while a boatman slides down the river; Van Gogh enlarges Hiroshige, intensifies his colors and frames the scene with Japanese characters borrowed from other prints.

Look at the work

Hiroshige translated into the color of Van Gogh

The large diagonal of the bridge separates the river from the gray-blue sky. The silhouettes inclined under their protections and the small boat give the landscape its movement despite the rain.

Van Gogh maintains the vertical proportions of the print inside a standard canvas and reserves a decorative border. The reds, greens and blues become more saturated than in the model.

This Japanese work does not mechanically copy the print: it allows Van Gogh to study a composition he admires, then transform it through scale, oil material and a much more intense color.

Composition, touch and color

Three observations specific to this painting

The Van Gogh Museum dates F372/JH1297 from October-November 1887 and lists it under s0114V1962. The canvas measures 73.3 × 53.8 cm.

01

The main diagonal of the bridge

The apron goes up from left to right and immediately leads the gaze towards passers-by, while cutting the space into two very clear planes.

02

The rain became a network of lines

Long oblique lines cover sky, water and figures. They unify the landscape without hiding the small silhouettes.

03

A border invented by Van Gogh

The characters do not translate the subject. They are copied from other prints and serve above all as a colorful and exotic pattern.

Documented benchmarks

Precisely identify the original work

The official notice explains why Van Gogh creates a border on a standard format canvas and how he modifies Hiroshige's chromatic intensity.

Model

A print by Utagawa Hiroshige

The composition comes from the sudden downpour on the Ohashi Bridge, seen from Edo famous for its diagonal and rain lines.

Proportion

A preserved print format

Van Gogh leaves a painted frame around the image to maintain its proportions in a wider rectangular canvas.

Color

A deliberately increased intensity

The red of the border, the green of the water and the blue of the sky are more powerful than in the original print.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

The copy should retain the large diagonal, regular fineness of the rain and sharpness of the border characters, while maintaining Van Gogh's deep colors.

  • The diagonal of the Ohashi Bridge
  • Passers-by in the rain
  • The boat on the river
  • The long oblique streaks
  • The red border with Japanese characters
