An industrial bridge absorbed by gray weather

The apron cuts the composition in the middle and separates two spaces of the same density: the sky laden with smoke and the Thames covered with horizontal wrinkles. The pillars are never isolated by a line; they appear when the blue of the bridge meets the warmer light of the arches.

The range initially appears monochrome, but it mixes green gray, Prussian blue, mauve and sulfur beige. A few darker touches indicate traffic on the bridge. Under the central arch, the tiny boat gives the scale of the monument and the depth of the river.

In W1562, gray is not an absence of color: it results from the balance between yellow smoke, blue stone and purple reflections.

The version kept in Bern

The Kunstmuseum Bern gives the Wildenstein number 1562, the date 1903 and the exact dimensions of 65 × 101.5 cm. The signature "Claude Monet 1903" is painted gray in the lower right corner.

The Savoy Hotel viewpoint

Monet looks out over Waterloo Bridge from his room on the north bank of the River Thames. The view plunges slightly over the bridge, boats and smoke from the opposite industrial bank.

A provenance documented by the Gurlitt legacy

The museum file traces the passage of the work by Durand-Ruel and Paul Cassirer before his entry into the Gurlitt family. The painting joined the Kunstmuseum Bern by bequest in 2014.

The mist should not be reproduced by uniform blur. Each arch maintains a different intensity, from the large clear opening on the left to the more muffled shapes on the right.

Earthy yellows and very diluted mauves avoid a only blue scene. They reflect the mixture of natural light, steam and urban smoke.

Horizontal keys on the Thames

The river is built in small blue-gray and purple bands. Their direction must remain lateral in order to support the large panoramic format and the weight of the bridge.
