Morning Mist W1196hand painted reproduction

Trees barely emerge from a field of white, blue, pink and lilac mist, their silhouettes gradually becoming visible above almost dissolved ground. Look at the work

The trees appear by degrees, as if the mist itself adjusted their sharpness

The largest tree is placed slightly to the left of the center and rises almost to the upper edge. Several shorter shapes surround it, but their trunks and foliage merge with the air and only become readable from a distance.

White, sky blue, shell pink, lilac and very pale yellow dominate the entire surface. The orange touches of the signature and a few light greens on the ground introduce landmarks without breaking the luminous unity.

The mist is not a veil added in front of the landscape: it becomes the main material of the painting, the one in which the trees form and then disappear.

Composition, touch and light

What Monet builds behind the impression of snapshot

Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.

01

A hierarchy of almost invisible shapes

The large tree provides the first marker, then the eye discovers the narrow trees and side bushes. This gradual appearance reproduces the experience of looking into the fog.

02

Very close values but never identical

Depth depends on tiny differences between warm white, cool blue, pink and lilac. Each variation must remain present to avoid a flat surface.

03

Clear paint without empty areas

Even the brightest passages are covered with small touches and smears. The canvas thus maintains a continuous vibration rather than an inert white background.

Reference image

Read this specific version

Only one exact image of W1196 is used throughout the file. The real WebP measures 3,000 × 2,386 px and comes from the official open access file of the National Gallery of Art, without enlargement.

Composition01

Preserve low visibility of trees

The contours must remain interrupted and partially absorbed. Redrawing them clearly would betray the atmospheric phenomenon studied.

Color02

Keep colors in whites

White contains blue, pink, yellow and purple. These subtle deviations produce light and should not be neutralized.

Matter03

Keep the orange signature discreet

The signature at the bottom left offers the only frankly warm accent. It must remain readable without becoming more saturated than in the original.

Documented benchmarks

Three pieces of information specific to this work

The National Gallery of Art documents Morning Haze, oil on canvas from 1888, 74 × 92.5 cm, inventory 1958.12.1 and Wildenstein 1196.

Exposure01

Presented as early as 1891 as Foggy Morning

The painting appears at the Union League Club in an exhibition devoted in particular to Monet. This old title confirms that the fog effect is at the heart of its reception.

Provenance02

Acquired directly from Monet by James F. Sutton

The work then passed through Durand-Ruel and the Havemeyer collection before being purchased by Chester Dale in 1930.

Collection03

Given at the National Gallery of Art in 1958

Morning Mist enters the museum with the Chester Dale Collection and is numbered 1958.12.1. Its official image is distributed with free access.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

Fidelity here depends on precise relationships between light, touch, depth and color temperature.

  • The Wildenstein 1196 version
  • The large tree slightly to the left
  • The secondary silhouettes almost erased
  • White, blue, pink and lilac
