Three superimposed areas, connected by color
Sky, sea and rocks could form separate bands. Monet connects them by repeating the blue in the shadows of the coast and the pink of the sky in the clear passages of the water.

Artwork description
Claude Monet · The rocky shore facing the Mediterranean · Private collection
The Mediterranean forms a wide strip of intense blue under a pale sky, while a rocky yellow and pink promontory advances in the waves. No boat, building or mountain looks away: the canvas directly contrasts the depth of the sea with the rough material of the shore. Monet painted it in 1888 during his Antibes campaign.

Look at the work
The horizon is placed high, leaving the sea to occupy the heart of the composition. In the foreground, a curved cove enters from the left and meets a very clear rocky tongue. This movement opposes the horizontal swell to the diagonals of the seaside.
The sea changes from turquoise blue to ultramarine blue, then to purple in the hollows. The rocks combine lemon yellow, ocher, pink, green and brown, with small dark touches which indicate the reliefs. The sky, lighter, creates distance through its relative uniformity.
The "Big Blue" is not a flat area: each strip of water changes temperature, density and rhythm as it approaches the shore.
Composition, touch and light
Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.
Sky, sea and rocks could form separate bands. Monet connects them by repeating the blue in the shadows of the coast and the pink of the sky in the clear passages of the water.
The rocky point advances from the right towards the center, while the small cove on the left recedes. Their interlocking gives a very readable depth without resorting to architecture.
Between January and the end of April 1888, Monet produced thirty-nine paintings on the Côte d'Azur. The maritime pattern allows it to measure brighter light and sharper colors than in the north of France.
Reference image
The visual corresponds to La "Grande Bleue" in Antibes, oil on canvas from 1888, 60 × 73 cm, listed Wildenstein 1182. The unique WebP measures 736 × 605 px, maximum definition of the exact public file available, without artificial enlargement.
Its sharp line contrasts with the vibration of the shore. A sea cut too far apart would reduce the impression of extent.
Turquoise near the rocks, bold blue in the center and purple in the dark passages produce the feeling of volume. A uniform blue would remove Mediterranean light.
Yellows and pinks dominate, but blues, greens and purples define the hollows. These cool colors prevent the coast from becoming a flat ocher mass.
Documented benchmarks
Painted in Antibes in 1888, this oil on canvas measures 60 × 73 cm. It bears number 1182 of the Wildenstein catalog raisonné and is today in a private collection.
Monet arrived in the region in mid-January 1888 and worked until the end of April. On Maupassant's advice, he stayed at the Château de la Pinède and traveled the cape to choose his motifs.
The countryside produces tight groups of maritime views, pine trees and panoramas of the city. W1182 belongs to a suite where the sea itself becomes the main subject.
The moderately horizontal format leaves almost equal room for marine expanse and shoreline. He distinguishes this version from the panoramas of Antibes where the city or the mountains occupy the horizon.
